Bud Bailey of VIP Woodworks has outdone himself with a run of RM30 in Indian Rosewood, a truly fabulous finish.  It will cost $800pr additional but I doubt anyone has ever made a finer finish.  Photos, you say?  Well I got one of those 5 Megapixel Gateway cameras, and it does have a USB cable...Any ideas what comes next??

Brian, just want to let you know that I am really enjoying the RM40's.  It takes awhile to break em in and get everything set up but they really are sounding good.  I am playing with the idea of adding a pair of subs after I get a new amp, since I will have to find something to do with the RMX1850.

When plugging the camera into a computer using the USB connection, which version of Windows you have will determine what the effect is.  Also, most digital cameras need to be set to the appropriate mode to transfer pictures.  You might have to break down and read the owner's manual.  Windows XP will automatically recognize the camera as a USB mass storage device and open up a window to access the pics (files).  Windows ME an earlier versions will give you a bit more work to do.

A 5 megapixel camera will generate a 5 megabyte pic (file).  You probably do not want to try and post 5 meg pics, so you will have to use a utility to reformat the picture to reasonable resolution, i.e. 800x600.  At 800x600 resolution you have a 480,000 byte file, or ~1/2 a meg, which is good for posting.

If you have windows XP (if not, get it), and manage to get the pics on your computer, double click on the pic (file) and it should open up in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.  On the bottom of this utility is a row of icons.  Click on the second to last one on the right, that closes the viewer and opens up Microsoft Photo Editor.

On the top of Photo Editor select Image->Resize and you will get a pop-up.  In the pop-up select Units and set it to pixels.  Then set the width to 800 or less and the height to 600 or less.  Then save the file.

There are several ways to get the now reformatted pic (file) to this web site.  I generally use ftp but there are other ways.  Perhaps someone else can pick it up from here.

Redbone,

Glad to hear things are going well.

How did you finally set things up?

Hey George, I've been following your progress as well.  I am a long ways from finally but I have gotten the major kinks out.  The two major changes are speaker placement and break-in.  Placement of the speakers is absolutely crucial.  I have a somewhat odd setup in that the speakers are not symetrically aligned.  But the room isn't symetric either and I really like the sound in this configuration.  Break-in also makes a huge difference, especially in imaging; well maybe that's speaker placement.  Also, I, me, need to break-in, I've been listening to cheap-ass stereos with the loudness and bass turned up for so long that I don't like other setups.  That's changing.

The RMX1850 amp, which I use to drive the bass, puts out 600 wpc@4 ohms.  I still don't have a preamp so I am using the gain control on my CD Player as a master volume.  I can comfortably listen to most CDs at full gain with this setup.  The 40s just suck-up power.  Also their sound is so clear that even loud it isn't harsh.  The graininess is gone, I believe that that was just a matter of break-in.  And either I have adjusted or the speakers have broken-in, but I don't hear a deficiency at the lower mid-range anymore.  My guess is that it takes awhile for the cones to loosen up.  I am going to replace my amps, and have been considering your rec on the Rowland 201s.  If I go that route I am playing with the idea of adding a pair of subs and driving them off of the RMX for a just kick-ass Rock and Roll system.

I've benn working a lot, ~70hpw, so I haven't had any time for mods.  The first thing I am going to do when I get time is build several pairs of speaker cables and then replace my ICs.  After that a good new amp.  Then I think I may get a pair of subs.  I am not sure about the subs yet, the bass on the 40s is fine, but they have such an incredible mid and high range that I think a little extra kick down low could really make for a lively system.  Fortunately, I live on an acre and a half of land.  No complaints from the neighbors yet.

Still no photos of this $800 option?

The only thing I could find on the web is this:

which is not exactly what I had in mind.

Could someone please come forward with a photo?

Thanks!

Ugh.  You just had to make me re-ponder the eternal question as to why ugly rock stars get hot babes.
