More power
« on: 26 Apr 2004, 08:32 pm »
I've just built some Ellis 1801B's and am thinking about upgrading to more power.  I currently have a stock AKSA 55.

I'm looking for advice about whether I should replace the current amp with an AKSA 100, biamp with another 55, or biamp with a 100 on bottom and my current 55 on top.

Thanks

A plus for biamping is the HUGE increase in power obtained by the division of labor. If the crossover point is close to dividing the spectrum into two halves of equal power (which, unfortunately, is programme dependent) then getting a second 55 would give you the equivalent of a 220W amp per channel. Getting a 100 for bass, however, might be a good idea from the point of view of current demand. Depends on the particular drivers involved. I'd have to look at the Ellis design.

Personally I am a huge fan of active biamping, and used to do it for live gigs where the increase in sound power gained this way results in a huge saving in amp rentals. I use 3 55s to triamp a Phoenix-type system. I had to take the AKSA gain down because it's soo daarn loud!
Cheers,

Have you consider upgrading to Nirvana or Nirvana+?
The OW1 will sound sweet with the upgrade.
