I got a new phone (Droid Bionic) and as it was syncing my 1000+ contacts I started to wonder how it's all backed up.  Well, it's not!

I googled how to backup gmail and there seems to be a few ways. 

Can anyone recommend an easy way to do it that is proven?

I was recently thinking the same thing and of getting that new Bionic.  Let me know how you like it Mr. Popular with a 1000+ contacts, do those include Facebook friends?  Google calendar has been a lifesaver.

No facebook or any social site contacts.

Can you access Gmail through Outlook, or a similar program?  If so, maybe you can back up through that program?

It appears like the new Gmail has an export function.  Go to contact then click on "More" then "Export".  You can then export your contacts from there in CSV.  Nice to know there is a backup of some sort.   

This is what I get:
