We brought to RMAF, both a stock AND modified Oppo 95.  We have done a number of informal A/B demonstrations today, Friday.  Tomorrow we will have scheduled times for formal A/B demonstrations, using an identical pair of SACD's and FIM CD's.  I bought two identical copies of each today, for the official A/B demo's tomorrow.

I am hoping that all who are here at RMAF, will be able to attend at least one of these demos and if so, to post your impressions on AC.

I am putting my money where my mouth is here!

Both units are feeding the new KWI 200 via WyWires and the KWI 200 is driving Daedalus Audio Athena speakers.

We have a great room this year and I look forward to seeing many of you there!

Sincerely,

Dan W.

We did a number of A/B demos and the reaction from listeners was universally good.  It made the benefits of the mods quite audible I believe.

I would still like to have any of those who attended, to give their candid opinions her.  I would be most grateful.

Thanks,

Dan

Real quick, basic impression - everything got a bit better.

The sound was smoother and a bit sweeter. Massed strings were better. Soundstage was improved. I hate to use the term "warmer", as there seems to be a percetion out there that this means added midrange and/or rolled off highs. That's not what I heard - this was more along the lines of just tube vs SS "fingerprint".

I would be more confident of making additional comments, but I wasn't terribly familiar with the music - and I didn't bring stuff I was familiar with (insert icon of kicking one's self in one's own rear end).

I  am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my demo LS100. I will see how much that helps, then decide whether or not I need to figure out a way to rationalize an upgrade on my 95  :icon_twisted:.

To the previous comments I would add that the modded Oppo was a huge improvement over the stock unit. I was in Dan's room on numerous occasions hearing discs that I'm familiar with. The improvements can be described as immediately obvious in the following areas:

1. MUCH bigger soundstage with real depth, height and width.
2. Presence in vocals and instruments with clearly defined images floating with palpability.
3. Smooth and organic with almost no hint of that digital glare or nastiness that we all hate.
4. Much more dynamic with transients that jump out as in real life.

I would have to say that Dan's mod package improves the Oppo player to the level of an Esoteric or Ayre at less than half the cost of those units. On Sunday, Dan was playing some Stevie Ray Vaughn "Roughest Place in Town" on the modded Oppo and it sounded fantastic. Bravo Dan!

I dropped in on Dan and Kristen a couple of times and sat through several cuts of demonstration on two occasions.  I'd opine the differences were certainly NOT subtle, and were immediately apparent from the very first note each and every time.  The Modwright tube modded unit brought the vocals forward and gave them larger scale.  The soundstage opened up markedly going both wider and deeper.  It breathed life and fullness into the music and gave it greater dimension.  You might not know what was lacking until you heard the difference since the 95 on its own does a pretty decent job, but it really was no contest to my ears which I'd want to take home. Going back to the stock 95 the soundtage shrunk and vocals became more distant and smaller in scale, as if someone sucked the life out of them and pushed them away.  Not at all a subtle difference, yet not one you'd necessarily think of just hearing the 95 alone (I say that because the first time I came in the room the stock player was playing and I thought it sounded pretty good...until it was switched to the modded version).  It was also my first time hearing the new KWI200 integrated, and with Lou's new speakers no less.  I'd first heard the Athena's at Lou's place, which I found a bit overly damped as a listening from what I'm used to (which is probably overly live).  At the show Lou's new Athena's really shined in both Dan's room and Emmanuel's room downstairs. The new KWI200 sounds great and was a nice complement to the Athenas, and the new billet remotes Dan has designed are pretty slick too.  The convenience of the digital interface and remote should be very enticing, along with the high WAF of the beautiful design, and the convenience of the one-box solution.  I did not get to swap in the integrated in my own system when I had it here for lack of time, but I will certainly give it a listen when I get it back for pictures of the interior.  Usual disclaimers apply.
