Bryston DAC "lock" indicator
« on: 22 Oct 2011, 01:40 am »
Hi,

Just purchased a brand new Bryston DAC and was wondering if someone can explain why the "Lock" indicator is set? I'm using a M2Tech Hiface device from my Mac to the DAC. I've tried to reconfigure the M2 but to no avail, ie the DAC locks at whatever sample rate I set the Hiface at. This seems to essentially disable the upsample feature of the DAC.

I believe the BDA-1 sample rate LEDs indicate the incoming sample rate.

I would assume that the when the UP-SAMPLE button is engaged, the DAC is upsampling internally and the incoming sample rate LEDs will be green for 32K, 48K or 96K rates that are upsampled to 192K and the LEDs will be amber for 44.1K and 88.2K rates that are upsampled to 176.4K.

The Lock LED should be lit if the incoming signal can be locked upon and successful playback is possible.

...yes, the "lock" led will light up if there is a valid incoming signal. if you should feed the BDA-1 with 176.4/24 or 192/24 signals the internal upsampling will be disabled (while the lock led will still light up given this signal is "playable").

ahhhh, thanks a bunch.

James, just a suggestion about the manual, not sure the purpose of the indicators is explained clearly....or at all? Or maybe I didn't read the manual closely...

Jay,
How are you enjoying your BDA-1 so far?  I really love mine.  I've gotten wonderful results with my Mac + BDA-1.  Tried M2Tech HiFace, but did not keep.  Are you using HiFace.. or HiFace Evo?  Personally, I greatly preferred Halide Design Bridge to Hiface.

Also, are you using Pure Music software?

I only recieved the unit late afternoon, so not much time to listen to it. Yes, I have the M2Tech HiFace and Pure Music software. Will be trying the Mac directly to the DAC w/o the M2Tech and will take a look at the Halide.

Will report back once I've had a chance to really listen critically--I'm now a full Bryston configuration (if you don't count the Mac iTunes/Pure Music part).
