Hi

Yes RED means you are clipping the amplifier  :nono:  - The odd time no problem but sounds like you need more power if you are playing at those levels longterm.

A distorted wave or clipped wave signal can cause clipping. Such as using an equalizer or having output levels set too high on computer output. I suppose even the odd MP3 could cause clipping.

The reason I say that is because I also have a 3B SST. To clip that you'd have to have the spl level pretty high, like over a 100 decibels. I suppose it may also depend on the speaker you're using.

The only time I can recall clipping this amp is when I was using an equalizer, which could be quite easy depending on the song. :smoke:

Back around 1980 my friend had one of the earlier Moog synths which he left at my place. Not having a proper power amp  I patched it through a receiver I had at the time, no more the 50 watts, think it was 25 watts.

It was fun making cool sounds and bending the wave. After about an hour or so that receiver was literally smoking. That wasn't from not having enough power, that was from the wave distortions. So that is what wave distortion can do to amp, I think it could wreck speakers as well but more than likely the amp will shut down first. :smoke:

As Neil Young said in the song Powderfinger..."red means run son, numbers add up to nothin"

Same thing for power amps and rated power output. It all comes down to if you can get  the little lights blinking ...or not.  I used to have a couple of 4B's running as mono blocks in my family room. I was using PSB's Stratus Goldi's speakers, which I believe had a 4-5 ohm impedance . Every time I played the Eagles movie "Hell Freeze's Over" the opening drum tracks of Hotel California would clip the amps......i swear it wasn't that loud ; )

Yes James  I know, a 4B in mono with a 4 ohm load is not a recommended configuration : P   Sounded pretty good though!

This reminds me of the time I witnessed 28's momentarily clipping driving a pair of JBL 1400's while playing a selection of Japanese giant drum music - truly an insane amount of energy as the entire room was vibrating  :o

Be well...
