Whatcha got in ya box?
« on: 4 Feb 2003, 02:48 am »
Hi guys,
I have at present a networked p2 350 running tri boot win 98se, win 2k and win XP (don't ask!)  with an M-Audio Revolution sound card and using latest WMP as the usual player software. I'm using the digital output of the Revo to an ART DI/O DAC.

All the music is stored on a server located in another room of the house, except for CD's which get played through the cdrom drive. This allows me to turn off the local HDD after 10 minutes and hence the pc runs very quietly.

At present I'm only listening to two channel music and this system does not have any duty as a HTPC. It works like a charm and means I can listen to online radio stations from all over the world as well as my own music collection. only problem  is the quality of some online audio is below par....

So what kind of gear do you guys have? I'm interested to learn how others have implemented a computer based audio solution as everything I've ever read is HTPC based and not audio centered! (eg. AVS forum).

I currently manage digital music with a machine built around a Shuttle barebones system, similar to this model: http://www.motherboards.org/articlesd/hardware-reviews/1227_2.html.

This is less than half height case built with a Celeron, 512 MB RAM and a 100GB/8 MB cache drive. I am currently using an external 80GB drive as well. The machine is built with extra quiet fans & Dynamat to keep the noise down. It is nearly silent, you can barely hear it in a quiet room.

The machine has a built in S Video out and I use a Stereo Link 1200 DAC
(http://www.stereo-link.com/)
which allows me to bypass the sound card via USB audio. It has a DVD player, but I do not use it in a home theater capacity, I have a conventional DVD player for that.

This computer runs Windows XP Pro. I use Winamp 3 & the Izotope Ozone analog modelling program for audio playback(http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/ozone/winamp.html). I use the latest Windows Media Player for video.

It lives behind the cabinet that houses my TV & other HT gear. The only monitor connected to it is the TV, so I usually use Windows Remote Desktop(like PC Anywhere if you don't have XP) from other computers to control Winamp, build playlists etc.

I am able to output audio from my HT receiver to other audio systems in the house and it is very convenient to use my laptop & wireless network to control the music content where ever I am.

Most audio gear enthusiasts shun this sort of thing but it works great for me. I have a decent 2 channel set up in my office, and there is obviously a big difference with vinyl or CD as a source, but mp3 files sound better than most would think. This is also a great setup when we have guests over, I can set up 5 hours of music and never need touch the systems.

I ran into Shuttle today down at the local computer store while buying a replacement drive for my laptop... (that's how we do things here :| )

A pretty beefy one would come in around 1200 under-dollars, which I must say seems pretty decent. I'd use it as my local web server as well. Anyway this little box has re-ignited thoughts about building a media server at home. Apparently a completely silent one is on the way.

I was using Windows Media Player 10 but since I got Foobar2000 with the WaveOut option, WMP just sounds muddy.

Try sorting that out. You could use Winamp 5 and see the results, much clearer.

I am not yet running an audio PC but it is very near around the corner.   What I want to know is how in the world do you do this?

I didn't know you can turn off HDDs on a running PC.  Even the main HDD?

How do you get the Remote Desktop to work?

I've got a laptop which is connected to a Wireless 802.11g network. I tried matching the 'workgroup' but nothing.

Thanks,

He only uses the CD-ROM to play CDs. Accessing power management on a standard Windows OS allows automatic switching shut off of the HDD. He also probably uses the control on the CD-ROM drive without ever having to run   any program on the PC itself.

The Silentmaxx ST-11 case comes sound insulated, and using the SilenX power supply, SilenX CPU cooler, with SilenX 14dB case fans this still runs quiet using an ASUS K8N-E Deluxe and 3 GHz AMD64.  Harddrives are Barracuda IV.  Still experimenting with Foobar2000, Music Lobby, and ASIO output to EA modded dAck 1.

Right click "my computer", choose properties and pick the "remote" tab and check the "allow users to connect remotely to this machine". Check to make sure your account is allowed to connect. You might also need to check the firewall and make sure your workstation is allowed to connect. I think it's open by default but best to make sure.

Of course you may have already done all this in which case simply ignore my blather. :)

Josh, you can do this if the software for the player etc is local but the media files are on a server (different machine). In the power management section of the control panel (windoze machines) you can select when a HDD stops spinning after not being accessed - in my situation, as long as the player program is up, there is no need to keep the HDD spun up... and the PC goes into "silent mode" while i play a music list whose files are based on the server... pretty simple really.

The latest thing I've done is to run the whole deal via a wifi PDA (Dell Axim X50V) so now I have a touch screen remote that can access all my files, create playlists, see album covers etc etc... using Xlobby to do this and it works GREAT. see www.xlobby.com for details and a free download

I thought there was no way to stop Windows from accessing the main drive from time to time for its secret purposes.

I think you will find that is a conspiracy theory  :D
