Batch convert FLAC to ALAC
« on: 22 Nov 2011, 02:56 pm »
Having bought a mac mini I intend to use as my music server (with Logitech Slimserver s/w or whatever they are calling it these days), I am looking to convert my ~800G of FLAC into ALAC so I can use some of it on my iTouch or my wife's iPod shuffle.  No doubt the girls will soon have their own, so looking to centralize my music collection.

I am using a PC to do the conversion.  I have downloaded dbpoweramp, and although it can batch process the conversion, it does not delete the original FLAC files.  I don't see how to make it do that.

Not looking to manually delete 800GB of FLAC after ALAC conversion!

Anyone have a simple solution I may have overlooked?

I dont think any program will delete the original file. Once you've converted your entire library and are happy with the results, simply go to the parent directory and hit delete. I don't see that as being a problem.

Ah, I would have to setup DB to create a new folder in which the ALAC goes, and then I can go back and delete the FLAC folders.

Much less overhead, good idea!

I had been depositing the new ALAC into the existing FLAC folders...

Although some might wish to verify successful conversion on some files before deleting the source file, if you have dBpoweramp's DSP Effects and Actions installed, in the Options section you can add the action "Delete Source File".

Do I need to register to have that option?

At present, I just have it downloaded, I have not bought it - that functionality might be part of the paid version?

Sorry, yes that functionality is part of the $26 Power Pack license.

Mark:
You can do a search for all .flac and when it is complete, delete from there.  800 gigs will take a while of course.

Thanks for the pointers so far boys.

800GB on a 1TB drive, so I cannot batch all into ALAC, and then hunt down the FLAC.  I could batch my batches though!

Further investigation - I can download and use the plug ins for free, so I have DB setup to convert and delete the original files - I tested it first, and it works fine.

800GB is going to take a while anyway!  Using my work PC to help that!

I'd still say batch convert without deleting 100-200 at a time. Just to be on the safe side. Check random tracks after each conversion, and then delete. Better safe than sorry.

Have batch processed A-E in my collection.  I have it setup to auto delete the originals.  I am doing each letter of the alpha at a time, and random checking afterwards.  It is going slowly, but well.
