tubes, mix and match?
« on: 9 May 2004, 04:25 pm »
I have an Eastern Electric Minimax with 2 12AU7 slots.  I was rolling a few tubes to see what changes I'd get and accidentally put a 6DJ8 in for the rightmost position as you face the pre.  (I thought it was a 12AU7)  It sounds very good but the tube glows a bit brighter than I remember.  I don't really care about the tube because it's an old one that I wouldn't normally use anyway.... but, was wondering if it was interchangeable and if not what harm I may have caused.

Also, does anyone know if a 6n1p is swappable with a 12AU7?  Is there a chart of what tube does what?

Thanks,
Carl

http://www.duncanamps.com/tdslpe/  Try this site. I believe there is a downloadable application chart there.

Hi Carl,

You might want to check with Bill since the manual for the Preamp says to use "only" 12AU7 tubes (page 2 "set up")

And the 6DJ8 is actually a tube that is "compatible" with the MiniMax CDP.  See page 3 of the manual where it states the 6922 or 6DJ8 can be used.

It's definitely NOT compatible.  The voltage capabilities are very different so, if the Minimax is using the 12AU7 voltage (300) rather than the 6dj8 (130), it's way beyond its design capabilities.  The link from Mark provided all of the specs of the tubes and would explain the brighter glow.. ;)  I doubt a 6dj8 would last long being used at almost triple its rated capacity... regardless of the other differences...
Thanks,
Carl
