HT set up question
« on: 8 Sep 2011, 12:08 pm »
Hi all
trying to set up a HT in my downstairs. I have a new Marantz AV pre/pro that has hdmi inputs and an older HD TV that does not have hdmi. I would like to run hdmi from the sat box to the pre/pro but will need to run the component connectors to the tv. will this work or does hdmi in mean you need to use hdmi out? i do undertand the differences in resolution between the two. I just did not know if the pre/pro would handle the difference

If your pre/pro won't output what it gets via HDMI on the component video connections, you can always just run the component video connections from your cable box directly to the TV.  The cable box will output audio and video on all it's outputs simultaneously.  The only (occasional) issue with this set up is that sometimes the video from the component outs (going directly to the TV) isn't synched with the audio from the HDMI out (going to the pre/pro).  Most pre/pros will offer a synch adjustment to align them.

Buy an HDFury2 from Monoprice for $120.00.  It will convert your old HD tv to digital and will allow all HD programing to be viewed without danger of downgrade due to the so called digital flag being utilized on some content.  Insert it between the prepro hdmi output and your tv.

If your TV doesn't have HDMI or DVI connections, you won't be able to watch any of your sources via HDMI. Your sources will need to use component outputs. You could run the component cables from your source to the TV or run it through the AVP which has component switching capability. For audio you could use digital coax, Toslink, or HDMI to see which one works better. The sat box will max out at Dolby digital output which all the above connections can handle.

I retract my previous post because, although I have owned an HDFury for 5 or 6 years and it works perfectly, it is no longer available. Therefore, unless you can find a used one, there is no longer a HDMI to analog device in the marketplace.
