Vtuner WMA 768 not decoded through BDA-1
« on: 8 Sep 2011, 07:37 pm »
Hi,

Experimenting with the Vtuner service, I can play every stream MP3 in different resolutions, but when trying to play WMA 768k there's no sound. My marantz na7004 locks the channel and displays it properly, up to name of the station, but no sound. Is this an unknown stream-resolution?

the channel involved is Radio Symphony (internet only) http://www.vtuner.com/setupapp/guide/asp/BrowseStations/BrowsePremiumStations.asp?sSortby=HBR&sCategory=Classical&sBrowseType=Format&sViewBy= top of the list.

hanks,
Marius

It's not a matter of resolution (more accurately streaming bit rate), but the stream type.

I don't believe the BDA-1 can play WMA files or WMA streams.

iTunes can play WMA files (by converting them to AIFF first), but can't play WMA streams.  On my PC, foobar and J. River Media Center can also play WMA files but can't play WMA streams.  The only program that I have that will play a WMA stream is Windows Media Player.

The Marantz NA7004 specs say it can play WMA files, but it too probably can't play WMA streams.

No, not the case.
I thought of that too, but just played station Musica religious, another WMA stream, and it works fine. its 194 k. The Na7004 reads it and the BDA decodes its flawlessly.

I noticed however that the Radio Symphony channel does not come in. 0%. So maybe they are offline.

Marius.

Nice to know both machines do play WMA streams though....

Interesting.  I had never tried to play WMA streams before so I took the behavior of the Radio Symphony 768K WMA stream to be the behavior for all WMA streams.  So I then tried to play the Musica Religiosa 194K WMA and found this behavior in my players:

iTunes - could not play
foobar -  played OK
J. River Media Center - played OK

I noticed however that the Radio Symphony channel does not come in. 0%. So maybe they are offline.

On the other hand, the Radio Symphony channel is online and playing on Windows Media Player (except that it sounds more like a 128K stream or less, and a graphic banner appears in the player that says "128K HD").
