I have spent time with the Ultraverve and I like it's wonderful soundstage and well balanced sound.  How would one compare it to the CJ Premier 17 LS

I own the Ultraverve III and it is very musical with a wide soundstage. This is the only preamp I have owned that I can set the volume and leave it from cd to cd. My friend has owned the Dehavilland and currently owns the 17LS. He likes the .7db steps in the volume control on the 17LS and says that the stock tubes sound the best. He has large amps and needed the small steps to get better control. He says the 17LS is very good, buy at one point wanted to go back to the DeHavilland.

I would like to try different caps in the DeHavilland to see what difference they would make, but I like the sound stock.

I was not much help!

The new Ultraverve has a new stepped attenuator.

In terms of pure SQ which did your buddy prefer?

My friend did not have the new volume control, so no real comparison from him. I have the new volume control in my DeHavilland and for some reason, I can set the volume and very rarely change it for a listening session. I could not do this with VTL, Cary, ect.

The CJ is well respected and at one time, he said it was the best he has had, but he has changed preamps quite often. At one point, he asked me if the DeHavilland would have been better with the new volume control. So, it may be a tossup. Kara Chaffee is been very good to me with questions.

I'll ask my friend to chime in when he gets back.

You might also look at the SAS Audio Labs 11A.  I had the DeHavilland Mercury 3 and SAS 11A in my system together.  It was close, but the SAS sounded more musical in my system, with better dynamics and tonal balance.

One very nice feature  of the Dehavilland Ultraverve is the ability to roll one 6SN7 for the sound you like. Cheap tube rolling.

But I need the remote.

It's a shame that youith is wasted on the young.

I took a look at your gallery.  Those are some nice looking Salks.  Is that a rosewood?

Tubeburner,

Thank you for your insights.  There is a Ultraverve on A-gon for a really good price with out an ac cord.  Any recommends on an ac cord?

Yo Yo Cocobolo!

What amps were you running with the Mercury when you had it?

Was there a good synergy with the system?
