How many people here have an amplifier that heats their room

. . . And how do you deal with it?

I have two monoblocks right now, and while they don't run extremely hot, they do heat my room well. I have a small room, and I don't know if I can deal with anything hotter.

The amps I like run much hotter than these monos I have, but I suppose I am willing to deal with the heat if it gets me where I want to go. How do you all deal with it?

I had the Cary V12, and in my previous studio apartment driving the RM40's it would heat my room 15º easily. Opening the window wasn't a good option as it was noisy downtown and the aircondition degraded things immensely. I ended up selling it and buying a Spetron that runs cool to the touch. That wasn't the only reason, but certainly contributed to the overall decision.

If you absolutely have to keep the hot running amp, I would look into water cooling systems meant for computer overclockers. They are meant to be relatively quiet and absorb the heat instead of dissapating it into the room.

My Cary V12R heats up my 11x13 room nicely. I have a 52" Hunter ceiling fan that helps move the heat. I don't do all day sessions like I do in the winter when outside temps top 80. Headphone listening is good in Summer too. Even with headphones I get some heat from tubed pre and tubed CDP.

My Cary SE 2A3 monoblocks will warm up my small (12' x 13') super insulated room also. It's great in winter. I'm relocating my listening room to a larger, better location.

my 80 watt class A amp get pretty warm/hot in my room... when I first got it, I couldn't stand it.... I almost returned it but after 2 months or so.. i'm getting used to it... Josh, how do you implement the water cooling method to an amplifier?

Vasu, I imagine it could be relatively easy to implement on a SS amp, such as a class A but attaching the cooling element to the heatsinks, much like you would with the CPU. With Tubes it might be more challenging and you would need to be a little creative.

My Cary Rocket 88 must run cooler than the V12 (Gee, I'd imagine 8 extra power tubes would do that!

) cause it doesn't heat up the room too badly. Tubes are actually briefly touchable without instant branding. Norh SE-9 runs a lot hotter though. I deal with the problem by sweating a lot, then passing out from heat exhaustion. Other than that it's swell.

I thought having a dryer hose duct thing suspended over the amp running to a window-mounted fan might be a cool idea. Plus it would greatly increase the nerdy factor.

One way I've seen done, depending on the HVAC system duct locations, is an additional air return 'branch' attached to the ceiling in the offending room. If located high and off to one side of the room, furthest from listener, it'll suck alot of heat off the ceiling and assist in room cooling. If you're not running as cooling sys, you can still run as 'fan' to circulate/vacate air.

Why are they excessively noisy? I thought the water coolers were pretty quiet. I could be wrong.

Water cooling is good for removing heat from something. But you still have to remove the heat from the water, presumably by running it through a radiator of some kind. If the radiator is in the same room, the net result is that you haven't removed any heat from the room.

Probably simpler to just locate the amp in the next room and run cables through the wall

my old dynaco tube amp was replaced by a carver professional ZR1000....

better sound with almost no heat!!!!

Since your located in Minnesota , you might want to bring back the Dynaco for the winter. I've heard it gets pretty cold there in winter !!

My electric utility loves me. I heat my listening room with Quicky Silver mono amps, Quicky full function preamp, Wright sound phono preamp, Fisher and H.H. Scott tube tuners. I do save a little money each year by not needing to put up christmas lights.
