AppleTV(2) + BDA-1
« on: 14 Sep 2011, 12:46 am »
iTunes (Apple Lossless)/AppleTV(2)/BDA-1 is a wonderful combination!

This inexpensive streaming device has no right to sound as good as it does.  For folks who would like to try wirelessly streaming your iTunes files into your Bryston rig, AppleTV2 is a no-brainer.  Great value for the money.

My family lost our ATV2 power cord.  I called Apple yesterday to purchase a replacement.  They overnighted a new one at no charge.  A sweet and unexpected surprise.  I love good customer service.

I will say that the BDP-1 and Oppo's BDP-95 sounds a whole lot better than the ATV2 through the BDA-1.   It's only used now for the occasional movie rental, music video and of course Top Gear.

Agreed, I am using an ATV2 with a PS Audio Perfectwave DAC/Pre straight to PP300s and it really does sound better than I thought it would.
And the Apple remote app on an iPad is a great way to scroll through album art and select music.

I've been using the ATV2 since it was released.  Once I switched to a wireworld SuperNova 6 glass toslink cable, it equaled my CDP in sound quality.  I did extensive A/B testing with the CDP hooked to my DAC1 and the ATV2 hooked to my DAC1 playing identical material.  Then switched back and forth for instantaneous comparison.  With a good cable, ATV2 equaled CDP to my ears.  Sold CDP right after that.

A really great feature of AppleTV is AirPlay.  MOG has released a Mac app that is compatible with AirPlay that gives you access to millions of songs with playback quality approaching CD.  Highly recommended.

Yes, Airplay is a great feature. I was just watching some music videos streamed from iPad to ATV2 to big screen via a free app called VEVO. Good Stuff!

Grats on the BDP.   Nephew thought I turned on the subs when I swapped between ATV and BDP    All I could say is what subs?    The detail was there from top to bottom.

Ok here’s one you’ll not want to hear, I don’t have the $2200 BDA-1 but a very humble $59.00 Gefen DAC http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=5279 , which I initially bought just to run Netflix audio to the Bryston gear off the optical out on my plasma TV, but streaming my iTunes files through it via the Apple TV2  sounds pretty good without breaking the bank or your pocket change for that matter and the optical cable is included.

Oh yea?  I can play a bunch of tunes with spoons I got free from McDonalds! Can you beat that? :)

rob80b,
Sounds look you found yourself an extremely cost effective streaming solution!  You must be very pleased.

Very cost effective but given some critical listening I'm sure I'd be easily swayed toward a BDA-1.

"I can play a bunch of tunes with spoons I got free from McDonalds!" but real spoons sound so much better.  :D

I'm really jazzed to see what the BDP-1 brings to the party.  My BCD-1 is sweating it out...it's days may be numbered.

Interestingly, the ATV(2)+BDA-1 is wonderfully detailed from top to bottom.  A nice full-bodied sound, clean highs and gobs of bass.  I was listening a bit before work today, soundstage is both deep and wide on many recordings.  I love that the width extends beyond the speakers all the way to the side walls.  I've discovered I'm a bit of a soundstage freak.  This audio dimension was what inspired to me to explore Bryston further.. and ultimately sold my Naim setup.

Jaxwired,
I have a similar story.  Both the ATV2/BDA-1 and an NAD C541 CDP/BDA-1 sounded so ridiculously good in my system, I sold a high end Naim CDP with no regrets.  Well actually I do have some regret.  I got killed on the Ebay auction for my Naim piece.

The only time my CD player gets used is when I am copying music to the HD, and have it disconnected from the BDP-1.
