Apart from the kit from Hugh, the other cost is the (quote from website):

"YOU WILL NEED:  A case to mount the components in, connecters and wire, the power supply transformer, and the power supply components."

Appreciating that these are all variables, can you guys give me a ballpark idea of what to budget for each of these parts (and suppliers?) so I can work out roughly how much the whole exercise will require?

Cheers,

Mark

I buy 2RU cases from Altronics - about $100
2 transformers from Jaycar - about $50 each.
On/Off switch - $5.00
IEC socket and fuse holder    - $5.00
4 rubber feet - $5.00
2 RCA sockets - $3.00 each
4 banana sockets - about $5.00 each.
a 5 point tag strip - $1.00
About $5.00 worth of cables

So, less than $300 Australian

G'day Mark, I haven't purchased these parts locally but from the Jaycar website you can get a good idea:

Transformers $47 each

http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=MT2114&CATID=&keywords=toroid&SPECIAL=&form=KEYWORD&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=xxxxxxxxxx&Keyword2=xxxxxxxxxx&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=

Rack case $95

http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=HB5125&CATID=&keywords=rack&SPECIAL=&form=KEYWORD&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=xxxxxxxxxx&Keyword2=xxxxxxxxxx&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=

Switch $2

http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=ST0572&CATID=28&keywords=&SPECIAL=&form=CAT&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=xxxxxxxxxx&Keyword2=xxxxxxxxxx&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=448

RCA connectors $3 each

http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PS0276&CATID=35&keywords=&SPECIAL=&form=CAT&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=xxxxxxxxxx&Keyword2=xxxxxxxxxx&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=677

Speaker connectors $8 each

http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PT3008&CATID=35&keywords=&SPECIAL=&form=CAT&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=xxxxxxxxxx&Keyword2=xxxxxxxxxx&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=412

I figure that adds up to... er... $213. Plus a few bucks for wire. There are lots of options, I'm sure you could find better with the speaker connectors for instance and you'll see lots of people have made wooden cases for their amp which would save quite a bit there. On the transformers I have heard of Special and Harbuch mentioned as high quality local (to Sydney that is) manufacturers. Anyway hope this helps!

Up to the finish line, my 100N set me back just shy of a grand.

Toroids from Altronics, RCAs and binding posts from Jaycar, wire offcuts for hookup from the local sparky.

Saved a bit of cash by dispensing with the rack case and getting a local metal shop to fold up a three sided box (much like C section) out of 3mm steel plate with another 3mm plate on top. Amps, heaksinks and most components are fitted on an MDF tray which slides in from the end. Tends to be on the heavy side but sure as heck is solid.

But is still a temporary solution..........

When the next 100N turns up (soon I tell myself!!) they'll both be built into a cupboard about the size of a floorstanding speaker topped with a GK-1R and CD transport......my idea of lifestyle audio.

Hi Chris,

If you are really into saving, shop around Jaycar and Dick-Smith. The price do vary between the two shops.  Also, Jaycar have better trade discount than DS so it is worth applying for Jaycar Trade card. No harm getting DS trade card since you can use it for other thing in the shop.

Have fun,
Sam
