Has anyone had this problem?  Maybe it's the BDP-1, maybe not.  Anyway, here's what happens:  I'm listening to some music and all of a sudden the music just stops, right in the middle of a song. I pick up my IPad or IPod touch to try to start it again (I can use either) but nothing happens.  So, I turn the BDP-1 off, and then turn it on again.  It initializes and finally says "Bryston BDP-1."  At that point, I can select a new album, hit "play album," and all is well. 

This has happened to me three or four times, both with the attached portable drive and with a flash drive, so I suspect it isn't the drive.

Sounds strange - not heard of that - what software version are you using?

I think it's the April 1, 2011 software, as the unit was received from the factory in the latter part of April.

Never had this problem and I use both hard drive and flash drives.

Apple Lossless files will cause the BDP to lock up for me,  so I'm guessing that is it.    Convert that file to AIFF, FLAC or WAV and it should go away or at least it did for me.   

I've also had ALAC files cut out or chirp between songs which can be unnerving sometimes.   

Both of these issues are easy to reproduce down to the file and even to the second of the song.

Hi - yes I have about 400 songs in Apple Lossless I took off my MAC Pro and I do not have that issue???

I haven't updated the firmware yet, but I'm going to keep a log if the problem ever happens again.  Name of song, type of file, etc.  If I have to avoid Apple Lossless, so be it.

I maybe experiencing your problem too except the music stops in such a way that there is still mono tone sound like a phono pickup that is stuck in a record groove.  Just like you, turning off the BDP-1 and turning back on after a minute or so gets everything back to normal again after re-selecting an album.  My BDP-1 is controlled by two iPod Touch’s and my computer sometimes. 

This is an extremely minor problem to me and the thought of returning the unit to Bryston and being without this great player (I have the BDA-1 too) for a while has made me accept this minor glitch.  I got my unit November 2010 and thanks to James I have all the latest software.  This problem has only happened about twenty times in 9 months so Bryston might have to keep the unit for a few weeks just to experience the problem!

I have determined the problem is not my HD’s (two 1TB self powered) or my any of my memory sticks (thumb drives).  The problem has occurred on both HD’s and a few of the memory sticks so I would assume the problem is associated with the BDP-1 not any particular drive.

My music is from ripped CD’s via dB PowerAmp or downloads from HD Tracks, Linn or High Definition Tape Transfers.  Problem happens randomly  on any music but most times when more than one album is in a playlist. 

Can you let me know if there is total silence when the music stops or if there is still sound like I described above?

Anyone else had a similar problem?  Any suggestions as how I can be of more help to Bryston in pinning down this problem?

While using the Bryston max or mini interface, I've noticed the music to skip, stutter, etc so I've switched to the mPod and mPad interface to avoid that.   Maybe that is what you are experiencing?

When the music stops, I have compete silence.  Nothing.  I turn the unit off, turn it on again, and all is well.

Thanks for the info jas007.  Seems our situations are similar but not identical.  Like you, turning off and turning back on gets everything back to normal.  I guess I’ll ignore this glitch and continue enjoying this great player.  No way I can part with my unit unless this glitch happens way more often.

That's my fear.  It's one of those things that happens every so often. Even if I wanted to reproduce the problem, I'm not sure I could.

The new firmware allows you to view the MPD log file if you look in settings, select system log then select the mpd tab.  If it happens again, you might browse to it and see what it reports, it's mostly likely going to be the last few lines in the log file.

I'm now trying to restore the file that caused the BDP to crash.  if it still does it with the new firmware, I will post the log.
