Maggie 1.7s and ?
« on: 29 Jun 2011, 09:03 pm »
I am thinking about investing in some Maggie 1.7s.  I think to make the best use of these speakers, especially with the orchestral diet my system is accustomed to, I will need to upgrade from my CIA (Channel Islands Audio) D100s.  These are the first version of this amp, which uses a modified Hypex-sourced UcD180.  I do like this amp, but after five or so years, plus knowing the appetite Maggies have for current, I think it is time to move on.

I am considering:
Belles 150A Reference v2 ($2295)
Butler TDB 2250 ($2995)
Parasound Halo A21 ($2299)

I think the Butler is what I really want, but if I can spend less, that would be just fine.  The Belles is likely my second choice.  It and the Parasound are at the same price point.  Does anyone have any experience marrying these amps with Maggies, or other current demanding speakers?  Other suggestions in the $2K range are also welcome.  Thanks in advance.

Images,if your CIA D100s put out 200 watts into 4 ohms,I don't see a problem. Working the math you should be able to hit almost 106dB at 500 Hz before room gain is applied.
Your tweeter section is limited to an absolute maximum of 64watts and 4amps of current.
This equals about 101dB maximum from the tweeter section before room gain is applied.
A more powerful amp will not affect the tweeters power limit and maximum spl capability.
I would try them with the D 100s and see if they will play loud enough to suit you before replacing your amps.

I run a Parasound Halo A21 with Maggie 1.6's.  It is a very good amp that performs above its price point.  It is very dynamic with good resolution and punch.  I like to listen to my music on the louder side and the Maggies really benefit from the added power at louder levels.  I am using a Van Alstine hybrid tube preamp and DAC which really pairs well with the amp and speakers.  The A21 is a fairly neutral sounding amp and I like a little warmth to the sound and the tube gear does the job.

I have heard a Belle's Hot Rod 150a amp (at my good friends house and he has since replaced it with a pair of Nuforce Model 9 v2 monoblocks) and it is a warmer sounding amp but dynamically it can not keep up with the Parasound and it does not have the detail that the A21 has.  But I believe the Belles 150a you are looking at is a better amp than the Hot Rod. I believe the refrence 150a has more detail and air. If all Belles amps lean to the warmer side then I would consider it over the Parasound if you prefer a warmer sound.

You may also want to consider a Van Alstine Fet Valve 550Hybrid amp with the double die option.  It pairs well with Maggies and is about the same price as the  other amps your looking at.  Plus it has a 30 day trial period. It will be mynext amp if I decide to upgrade.

You can also check Burson audio amps as well, they could make a nice match for the maggies.

Any used or new Mark Levinson amps. The older ones are not very expensive and will put many of the newer amps to shame.
