N2X or N3 with Tube Amps
« on: 9 Jul 2011, 06:47 pm »
Someone asked me today how well the N2X or N3/N3S sound with tube type amps. I am presently using a Parasound solid state amp and have never had the opportunity to hear them with a tube amp. They both sound very nice with the Parasound. My guess is that with a tube amp they should sound as good or better than a solid state amp provided the amp is of high quality. Any thoughts or opinions on this?

While I had the demo set of N2X's I powered them with an Onix SP3 and liked the pairing very much.

I play my N3TLs with my Onix H6550.  It sounds great.  I don't go past 25% on the volume and I use a 5771 input tube vs the 12ax7 which means I have a lot less gain.  I also have a nice Denon reciever and while it has more high end detail it is not as nice to listen to.  Meaning it just doesn't connect in the same way as my tube amp.  Plenty of bass from my tube amp.

Here is the thing with these speakers, look at the impedance sweep they are easy peasy to drive.  Tube amps love a speaker that does not dip too much and has high enough sensitivity that you don't need a bazillion watts to reach reasonable spls.  Infact, I specifically chose this speaker with tube amps in mind.

I have a diy tube pre and 15 w tripath amp with the N3s and I was just thinking how I can't imagine having anything that beats this.

Ok maybe I lack imagination...

Thanks guys for all the replies to my question regarding using tube amps with the N2X and N3/N3S. Confirms that tube amps do indeed work very well with these speakers.
