In the process, I used the instructions provided to reduce some of the Mac system overhead.
....However, since then, I have had no luck in getting iTunes to recognize artwork for importing music.

I'd wonder if the pruning mentioned above went awry and something was zapped by accident?

Moderator -- please remove this topic.  I (finally) found the source of the problem, and it is related to an iTunes bug.  Upgrading recently to the latest version eliminated the problem.
