Icon HDP / Icon Amp - subwoofer connections
« on: 14 Jun 2011, 11:04 am »
Hi,

I am newcomer to desk-fi, just about to purchase HDP/Amp combination and would appreciate any advice on subwoofer connections. The objective is for a nice desktop solution which would also be able to fill out a small study (13x10 feet). I am looking to use my existing Definitive Tech Mythos Gem speakers (89-91 db sensitivity, claimed 60 Hz bass extension). The Gems give remarkable clarity and nice tuneful bass at low volumes, but they seem to need reinforcement even at moderate volumes. I intend to add my Sunfire HRS 8 sub to the equation. How should I connect the sub to get the best overall result? I want to fill out the sound whilst maintaining the tuneful bass.

My thinking was to go HDP line out to sub, then line out from sub to Icon Amp. However looking at many audiophile websites, opinion tends to favour speaker level connections so that the amplifier "sees" the load and the sub works more in unision with the main speakers. It could be a valid point for full range speakers, but the for smaller satellites such as the Gems I am not so sure.

If speaker level is best, the Sunfire is common grounded and I am not sure whether this is good for the Icon Amp?

Any help much appreciated!
