no gain from BDP-1 from digital files
« on: 2 Jun 2011, 02:31 am »
Is there a way to increase level from digital out from Bryston BDP-1 ? When using Radio 1 internet radio stream, lots of gain ( output ) for some reason. All my music is on SSD hooked up to Bryston BDP-1 but alot less gain (output ) I am using a Bel Canto DAC as preamp. On radio streams good volume at 87 to 93 on Bel Canto but playing digital files from usb ssd hard drive have to use 95 to 100 on Bel Canto ( which is 100% Max out )

Is they any setting to increase digital output gain ( output )from Bryston BDP-1 ?

Hi Dan

No I am sorry there is not. The radio stations have a lot more input gain than the digital files but I only have my BP26 preamp at about 10 o'clock for normal listening.

My guess is the bel canto Dac has a lower output than the Bryaton BDA DAC and certainly much less than a preamp

I suspect that since the Acoustats Spectra 22 ( electrostatic panels ) being only 86 db efficent is part of issue. Running these full range with no subwoofer!!!

Panel bass sure is different....

btw meters on my Mac MC302 is at 300 watts to 600 watts peak, no distortion at all.

Guess need to invest in a preamp and not use DAC as preamp.

Hi Dan,

Yes I woould say the preamp is the way to go.  Most of the units like you mention only have small amounts of voltage swing whereas our BP26 preamp for example can swing plus or minus 30 volts.

Solved problem of no gain :D

It was suggested to try different output tap than 2 ohms on my McIntosh MC302 by my boss at work D Austin.  I changed output tap to 8 ohms and now all kinds of volume, more slam in bass + better dynamics  :green:

btw James, we sold now 7 Bryston dacs since I showed how well it performs great using BDP-1.

Wow thats great - thanks for the support.  i have to say the DAC and the BDP have been the most successful lauch ever for Bryston.

Now imagine how many you would have sold if it had an internal DAC...
