They are very good speakers and I can see why everyone loves them, but I just don't have the energy to re-voice my system around them.

I feel your pain Fred. There really are very, very few affordable commercially made loudspeakers meant to be placed closed to walls these days and even fewer that will do well with small to medium wattage. If it's any consolation, the little guy will be up and about and your system kiddie proof before ya know it.

I actually withdrew them from the sale block last night.  Things just sort of snapped into place, ironically with the Torii I wasn't liking with them. 

I have more experimenting to do before I resolve which speakers I'm selling.   

As for the kiddo, he's doing a lot better, but has a nasty cough that keeps him up at night.

To hear potential in the speakers I simply swapped power cords and went vice versa on what was on my amp and pre.  It didnt make it a killer combo, but it did motivate me to keep trying and I hit an awesome synergy with a music reference rm9 wearing 6550 tubes yesterday.  Today I'm borrowing a VAC PA100 /100 which is nice but not as magical as I recall the rm9 my friend brought over.

lived with a rm 9 for over a decade. EL34 tubes are less harsh than 6550s if you need even more sweetness and warmth. does your rm 9 have a feedback switch which changes damping??

Saw your comment elsewhere that you are looking into Rogue as a good match. What did it give you that other combos didn't?

The Rogue Cronus Magnum was a really excellent pairing with these speakers.  The vons IMO are a bit on the well mannered/polite side and the Cronus was like a much needed adrenaline shot.  Bolder tone, texture dynamics bass, texture.  Just a lot more drive and fun for me.  That amp gave me the qualities I was missing from my zu speakers while retaining the merits of the vons. 

I'm currently on the look out for a used Cronus magnum after hearing rpf's unit in my rig this past weekend.  It is damn good, one box, attractive and finally gives me a remote...   also the lower cost offsets some of my recent insanity.
