I don't get how dynamics and nuance are mutually exclusive but my favorite (of the several I've heard) is Andrew Litton with the Bournemouth Symphony on Virgin/EMI. Excellent dynamic sound and attentive, soulful playing.

Clearly they are not, but just stating my preference for passion unless I know the piece well.  Thanks for the recommendation. I've already ordered a copy.

Mravinsky is by far the most driven and demonic version I've ever heard.  The soviet musicians play as though their lives were at stake (and knowing Soviet era policies, they probably were!).  Hard as nails and over the top intensity make this my number one rec for anyone that thinks of Tchaikovsky as a fluffy composer.

Thanks Tyson.  I have a copy coming to compare to the Litton.  Between the two, I should find what I am looking for.

I attended an audio GTG yesterday in NJ, ostensibly to hear some Galla 3.5 speakers, but actually to give me a reason to have made the 2 hour drive to Princeton Record Exchange. I've been trying to fill my Shosty collection, (still can't find #7), and a collection of Beethoven Piano Concertos. And the very 1st thing I saw, Litton's grouping of Tchaikovsky 1-6. And then the Mravinsky grouping, which I also grabbed.

I'm thoroughly enjoying Litton's version of Sym #6.

But then I next saw the Schnabel Complete Piano Sonatas - Beethoven, so I had to put Mravinsky back down. What a good day picking through bins of used CDs.

Still, didn't find the Shostokovich pieces I was looking for, guess I'll have to make the drive again in a few weeks.
