Tube amp extremely sensitive to network devices?
« on: 4 Jun 2011, 03:51 pm »
I have an EE Minimax tube pre feeding an Almarro tube amp - something was causing terrible static on turn on from time to time - After replacing tubes and cleaning the sockets I finally determined the wi-fi dongle on my DVP was causing the problem, so I took it out. Yeterday I plugged a USB hard drive into my new Oppo BDP-93 and the problem started again: loud static in my right channel speaker when I turned on the Almarro. So much so that there's a loud "pop" in the speaker when I turn it off, even at 0 volume. After unplugging the USB drive and letting the tubes cool down twenty minutes, same problem when I turned the Almarro on. Only giving it another twenty minutes, unplugging the amp, pulling the tubes out and re-inserting them fixed the problem.

Does anyone else find that attaching different network-related devices to their system plays havoc with their tube amp? Just curious, thanks for any feedback!

No issues with my tube amps and preamp from Atma-Sphere and my Modwright Transporter which has tubes in it as well.

Not the exact same thing, but if I place my cell phone near tubed electronics, I get interference through the system.

My Almarro A205A picks up 98.5 fm all by itself and plays it loud and clear with the volume turned all the way down. It thinks it's a tuner, not an amplifier.   It also has a really loud 60/120 Hz hum, and the AC transformer gets hotter than hell. It's in pieces in the garage now 'cause I got tired of messing with it. No more internet recommendations for me.  Lesson(s) learned. :bawl:

OK, now that the whining is over  :bawl:  .......... if your Almarro is made anything like mine is, then it is just going to be more sensitive to RF interference than other tube gear. You may need to experiment with ferrites and zobels on both speaker and amp ends of the speaker wires, and maybe even the RCA inputs. Move anything with a switching power supply far, far away from it. Hopefully you have better luck with yours than I did with mine.

FWIW, some solid state components that I have owned have had the same "radio receiver" problem, so it's not just an issue that only plagues tube gear. (A Whest phono stage, Ampeg BA115 bass amplifier, and Allen and Heath Mix wizard, just to name a few.) Some companies just don't address all of the issues inherent to their product's design before they ship it out the door. I believe that is really the root of the problem.

Good luck with your Almarro. I hope it stays fixed.  :thumb:

MttBsh,
Can you post a photo of the Alamarro's guts?  Best would be a high res photo uploaded to Photobucket or some such place where you can put a large file and then post a link to that.  I'd like to see RCA inputs and connections and wiring layout.

Quiet Earth that's a tough story, I'm sorry you had a bad experience.  I am oh so curious as what "internet recommendations" means and what your lesson learned is?  Feel free to PM if you wish.

Best,
Jake

Thanks quiet earth - sorry to hear about the state of your Almarro. Mine sounds amazing with my Cain & Cain Abbeys & Bailey so I'm not in a hurry to get rid of it -  but suffice it to say I will not be going to any kind of network or "music streaming" solution as long as it's in the system.  I'm surprised that whippin' up a batch of cocktails in the blender in the next room doesn't set it off!

Jake, sorry man, no current means of posting a high res shot of the amp's guts.

Thanks for your feedback guys

Matt

Motors create a different noise on the AC line.  You are experiencing, what I believe is, digital noise generated on the AC line or it could also be digital noise on the inputs due to unshielded internal wiring (why I wanted a picture).

If it's AC line generated then my question would be do you have a power conditioner or a power distribution system that does not have an isolated receptacle for the digital equipment then that may be the problem.  Isolating the digital equipment power supplies may solve it.

There's just so many things it could be that I hate just start throwing darts to troubleshoot it.  I was hoping with a bit more info the problem may be revealed.

Best of luck.
