Bugle build - great results
« on: 23 Jul 2011, 05:40 pm »
Just a quick note to the Hagerman community -

Last December I decided to build the Bugle.  Started with basic card and decided quickly to add the power supply.

I am very happy with the sound of this phono preamp.  Built the thing stock except for some changes to the power supply board, running at slightly less voltage to accommodate AD8620 opamp in the third position on the bugle card.  I also set it up to be able to run either AC or battery power via a 4 pole double throw (on-off-on) switch.  Different color LEDs indicate power source - Blue for AC, red for battery.

I just upgraded my phone cart, had a Grado ZT+ entry level job and moved up to the Reference Sonata hi-output model.  I kinda wondered as I placed the order if the cart was going to outclass the Bugle.  No worries.  It is a superb combination.  The AD8620 nicely complements the Grado's sonic signature.

Thanks to everyone here that helped with some of the power supply issues - particularly to Jim Hagerman for some above and beyond help.

I still need to put finishing touches on the case and figure out a better way to attach batteries to the back of the unit (thinking velco but there is probably a better way).

Perhaps some day I will try the Cornet.

I'd like to know how you solved those power supply issues because I'm having the exact same problem with those resistors and that replacement transformer. Also, my caps are running at over 30v as well.

I don't think the bigger transformer is a problem. The margins are lower, but they are still here.
