Hi David,
I'd definitely recommend you have a dabble.
It's a very rewarding hobby on a number of levels, obviously especially so if you love music.
You can spend as much or as little as you want.
Many start off modestly and just go where the journey takes them at whatever pace.
You meet some great people on the forums and there's never a problem of where to go for any type of advice.
It is a good tip knowing where to buy vinyl a good local store or trader is a real boon. But there are some good online resources like DISCOGS, for those specifically yearned for items.
As others have said consider a record cleaner either bought or home grown, depending upon your DIY bent.
As you're currently in Blighty it is probably worth considering what you want.
Somethings are more plentiful (and therefore possibly cheaper) over here than over the pond - and vice versa.
Linn and Ariston gear remains widely available for example.
Just something else to consider before the big move.

Get a good record cleaning machine, a decent turntable, cartridge and phono stage and enjoy your retirement!

If music soothes and moves you and sound matters and you have time and money to allocate to it....really, the highest definition source today is still vinyl - despite the pain of it.

If music is pleasant background and ultimately sound quality takes a back seat to convenience - or discretionary income is scant or nonexistent - stick with your digital only rig.

It's that simple - that matters to you is the only thing that matters.

My transition to vinyl has been a group effort.
Learning the ropes of tonearm set up and cartridge alignment is daunting for a noob but having an old hat walk me through it has given me the confidence to proceed. The cleaning process is also dramatically easier with help. Seeing how an established analog devotee processes their cleaning solutions has helped me over the hump.
Making sound strategic analog purchases has also been much easier in the light of having a groups experience to draw from.
This analog business is not plug and play IMHO, nor would I want it to be.
It is a consuming hobby. I enjoy the subtleties. I am available if any local bay area guys want help transitioning.
Tcg, john, has also been a great asset.
I couldn't have done analog without help, and for that I am grateful.

To add to above....Mr. Berndt took his analog lessons to a WHOLE 'nutha level now and builds his own massive, amazing turntables.

He can now teach most of us a thing or three in additional analog enhancements

Vinyl is a near never ending learning process...but, at some point many learn just enough to hear the superiority over digital technologies. 

Many others fall short as the time to learn and adapt is more than they care to give - or that digital technologies, so much improved at such reasonable prices today, are good enough for their needs and wants now.

If you're truly pleased with your music in whatever form it's derived from - try as I might despite so many attempts I just am short of full satisfaction with the various digital technologies tried.

Whereas, listening to vinyl, a grin purses my lips, my feet start tapping and I feel like I'm in a music venue far from my humble listening room

Hi Dave C you did not say how many CD’s you own already? If you already have a large collection of CD’s and have lost all your vinyl in a house fire, I would say stick to CD’s.

Will you be having CD’s and vinyl or completely ditching the CD’s and going back to vinyl?

If you already have a lot of CD’s and no vinyl you would be better of using the money to improve your current setup then starting again.
You will be surprised at how good CD players are now a days.

Reading what I say above you may all be thinking am a digital person, I do not have anything digital in my system. If you look at my avatar picture on the left, that is my actually turntable. It’s an Acoustic Solid One to One with a Dynavector 507MK II tonearm and Roksan Shiraz cartridge.

I think it would be money well spent to improve what you have, unless you are set on getting vinyl setup again.

thanks for the message. I have about 800 CDs but was thinking about starting up a TT set up. Where we will be moving to does have a couple of pretty decent (at least from on line look) record shops. My wife and I are going to the RMAF in October and I plan to not only buy some speakers but will also check out the TT set ups. Enjoy your music and thanks again
