Is Apple about to offer 24bit?
« on: 28 Feb 2012, 04:35 pm »
Hi Guys,

Just seen this, Is this the start of the 24bit onslaught we have all been waiting for? interesting idea, 'adaptive streaming' As long as you can choose the quality for yourself then we could have a large 24bit library available to us overnight, although I guess to start with it maybe only an option on selected albums with more to come, could be good news though, especially for us BDP-1 owners :)

With Apple's latest marketing claim that they have figured out how to compress a lossy file better doesn't shed a lot of hope that they are going to offer or support high-rez files anytime soon.

Even if they did offer high-rez streaming to the Apple TV or like device, that still won't be the same quality as the BDP, so I don't really feel the news being that great for us BDP owners.   If they started to offer hirez content, then sure, great news for BDP owners

I hear what you are saying Jim, but I think I'll remain optimistic for a little while longer :)

Actually, I was talking to one of the top guys at Linn last week, who I guess are one of the leaders in 24bit recording and with a vested interest in seeing 24bit get a foot hold to drive sales of their hardware and he said that he knows of 2 big announcements this year which will make 24bit mainstream, so fingers crossed he was telling the truth.

It's only logical to differentiate yourself as the premier music service. Grow or die.

Short answer: no way.

We're still years away from getting redbook, let alone hi-rez, from the iTunes store. Until it becomes a viable option for the majority of their customer base to opt for high resolution downloads or streaming, it doesn't compute.

The article linked in the OP, starting with the first sentence of the second paragraph, is ridiculously amateurish both from a business and current state of technology POV.

I'm all for high-res, so long as the music was recorded correctly in the first place.  Until everything is recorded to the standards of, say, Dark Side of the Moon, more bits aren't going to make a difference IMO.

I really like Floyd's current releases, but I just can't get passed the processing on the main vocals.  During the intro and instrumental parts, I can almost feel like I'm listening to live music.  Almost.  Once the vocals start, I'm painfully reminded that it's recorded.  Way too much echo and processing.  I know those albums have a ton of processing, but instruments sound just about real.  Then the singing starts.

I think most mainstream engineers will view the extra bits as more space to brick wall.  Could you imagine what Metallica would have done with St Anger?
