Enclosure with a built-in heatsink?
« on: 29 Apr 2011, 12:45 am »
Guys, I need an enclosure for my (soon-to-be) Mac Mini linear PS based on a Plitron 18v toroidal transformer (4" in diameter, about 2.25" tall) and a Paul Hynes regulator (94mm long x 48mm wide x 40mm tall - the height includes the above-board componentry as well as the necessary clearance under the board).

The thing is, the Hynes regulator needs a 0.7 degree C per watt heatsink.  The copper mount runs alongside the length of the regulator.

I'm planning on Neutrik connectors for the AC input and DC output and likely will also put in a Felix (based on the group-buy board)...not sure if I should put this on the AC side or the DC side...maybe I'll try one on each - I have them built.

Anyway, I need an enclosure that would work, specifically with the size of the components I have planned as well as the needed heatsink.  I was thinking about maybe repurposing a ONEAC isolation transformer enclosure but that doesn't solve my need for something with a heatsink.

Any ideas, guys?

Thanks!
Jim

To get to the thermal resistance you describe, the 10" x 4" version from Heatsink USA should be close.

Guys, I appreciate the replies.  I ended up buying the enclosure used for this amp:

Phil Marchand sold me the bare enclosure.  Its plenty big enough and an entire side of it is a heat sink, so it should work ok.

I think I should have enough room inside the enclosure for the toroid, Hynes regulator, and (I'm hoping) two felix conditioners.  I want to use one before the transformer and one on the DC after the regulator.

Actually, now that I think about it, any thoughts on using the felix before (120v a/c) or after (18v a/c) the transformer?

I've got a Greenlee punch ready to go and will put in a Powercon on each end of the enclosure, one input, and one output.
