Solo 103 Build
« on: 17 Nov 2010, 01:38 pm »
I posted this in the projects thread in the lab but figured I would post here also.
I just finished a pair of Solo103 speakers from HumbleHiFi.  They use the Fostex FE103en driver in place of the FE103e because I could not get the older model.  Of course they do not play super low but I am using them with a GR servo sub so no issue there. I think they sound very nice and smooth.  I used 3/4" blatic birch for the cabs.  Here are a few pics.

Thanks Dave.  I got to listen to these for a few hours last night with no distractions.  They really are a very nice speaker with great imaging, soundstage and detail.  Also as is to be expected they disappear leaving just the music.

Neat, I like the construction of the port(s). Interesting finish, is that pre or post varnish?

The “caramelizing” was pre poly.  Its funny what happens when you look over and see your torch sitting there.

Very, very nice.  Simultaneously whimsical and elegant.

Sorry to be late to the party.  But a very nice writeup (linked) and deserves a bump.  I've been messing with "full range" drivers for about 10 years or so and I agree that the 4" is the best compromise between treble and bass for single driver purists.

Hi,

I built a pair of full ranger based on a different FR driver(made in China) 4" and housed in a sealed enclosure. The enclosure size is about 5 litre. I paid less than $100 for this pair of drivers.

I was surprised the size of music sound stage it can throw out for such a small speakers. The only drawback is it cannot handle power. Most full ranger of this size cannot handle power, it tends to distort, there maybe an exception the Alpair range of drivers.

I would like to try the Alpair CHR70 it will go straight into my existing enclosure, you may like to try them I believe the new mark III model is very good.

Cheers. Enjoy your speakers.
