FS: Tube Audio Design Hibachi II monobloc amps
« on: 14 May 2011, 10:11 am »
After 25+ years of listening to SET amps, primarily 2A3, for the last year I've been giving a listen to solid state amps - Monarchy SM70 MkIIs, the TAD Hibachis, Primare, etc. While I enjoyed the sound of these amps, I've come to realize that I'm addicted to directly heated triodes. I purchased this pair of Hibachi IIs directly from Paul at Tube Audio Design on April 8, 2011. They have about 40 hours of play time on them and are in superb cosmetic condition. I have the factory shipping boxes, packing materials and power cords. At my asking price of $565

I'll absorb the cost of FedEx ground service shipping/insurance within CONUS and the PayPal fee. Prospective buyers can check my Audiogon feedback under user name reedlom.

Just curious how these sounded to other amps you compared them to?

A comprehensive reply to your question would take ... well forever. Comparing the Hibachi IIs to other solid state amps is easier. First, they have plenty of clean power with a good damping factor. Imaging is very stable. While they do not have the holographic soundstage of SET amps, they're very good with nice depth and width. I think their best virtue is the balance of the sound across the frequency spectrum with a superb midrange. Most importantly to me, the Hibachi IIs do not have a blatant solid state signature. They sound really nice with a good digital front end. Hope this provides an answer to your question.
