Parts Express is blowing out there TriTrix transmission line kits for $199.  Has anyone heard them?  The kit includes CNC cut MDF cabinets that you put together, drivers, crossover componets and free shipping, part #300-702

Cheap - yes, cheerful - no so sure.

From the limited specifications provided they don't handle much power and are only average efficiency.  The reviewers mention cheap driver build, sloppy cabinet cuts, boomy bass, and generally uneven frequency response.

I'm a huge fan of transmission lines, but like anything else, they can be screwed up.  And in the case of TL's there's fewer fixes possible.

I'd vote for fewer, but better quality of parts/materials if the budget must be followed.

I have heard nothing but great things about the Tritrix since it's inception. It's designed by Curt Campbell, who is one of the gurus over on Htguide.com and Techtalk (though he cringest at that term I'm sure). His Statements DIY designs are probably the most popular builds at this time. All feedback on the Tritrix has been it punches far above it's weight especially considering the average quality of the drivers used. You will not build a 2-way TL better for $200. No way. Buy with confidence. Do a search on either forum or google and you will find plenty of feedback.

I take anything on techtalk with a huge grain if salt, they are basically an über budget gear forum, and are generally a crossovers don't matter, cables don't matter, etc crowd. Generally.

That said, most of the reviews on the kit itself - on parts express are either way over-exuberant, unrealistically, 5 stars across the board, or, more realistically, money could be better spent elsewhere.

Just my two cents. I am building one of Curt's designs, the Statement Monitor, and am excited about it, but I could totally pass on thef Trixtrix. I believe you get what you pay for in most case.

I would give it away as a gift but i couldn't get excited about them as something id have long term

Are you kidding? It's a $200 TL, including the cabinet. How would that money be better spent elsewhere. I don't think anyone expects it to replace their Wilsons. The Statements cost what 4X as much when all said and done (not including tools)? Even the statement monitors will clock in at $500 or more. I hear you about the Techtalk forum but that's pretty recent there are a *heck* of a lot of good DIY designs that have come from there over the 5 years I've been in the hobby and I've built a few. Same with HTguide. And yes you do get what you pay for in most cases: a retail speaker would be let's say 5X cost of a diy, so a $200 Tritrix would compete with a <$1k from a store which sounds about right given all the feedback.

Believe me, I recognize your issues with that forum but they're no more exuberant than people here and they're views have nothing to do with the value of the design itself. The Tritrix design actually goes back a few years before PE decided to sell them, when the forum was less focused on buyout specials. And a lot of people who have good ears from that more productive time were impressed with the Tritrix performance.

hmmm, well if you say so, I trust your opinion far more than I would theirs. Other than  gift I suppose they could be useful as maybe some garage speakers or the like.

The reviews I spoke of were not from that lame forum but where actually from the product itself. I read a really negative review that was quite thorough and seemed to confirm my suspisions.

Wait so you don't trust the good reviews because they're too good but trust the negative review that confirms your suspicions. Ok. Well. What can I say.

I've said as much as I am going to say about them. Moving on...
