I don't wish to start and argument or go off topic but I would like to share some of my opinions and experiences with MDF. It can work very well in some situations.

MDF is not unpredictable or mysterious in any way, IMO and IME. Because it doesn't have the grain structure of plywood and hardwood, it behaves more like a metal and it does ring like a bell if left on its own. And, it is dimensionally stable so it is not as affected by swings in humidity. MDF is, however, much more brittle than plywoods so it can't be flexed much without the risk of breaking it.

I built my sandboxes with MDF sides and veneered 1/4" maple over that. Plywood for the bottoms. Strong, stable, looks great and I still haven't found the noise floor.

Again, the folks I know who use MDF as the sandbox shelf have large, aluminum heat sinks attached to the underside and sunk into the sand. This greatly enhances transmission of vibrations.

There are many ways to build an effective sandbox, my approach is just one of them.

Ok, I'll leave now and keep my opinions private. Have fun!

Paul here's my sandbox made for me by a good friend. It's made out of MDF and covered with african Rosewood veneer

beautiful wood.  I have some cherry with similar grain patterns. I purchased it to make AR plinths. It sat in the garage for a year and twisted.........Now I have some very pretty flower boxes.  :duh:
