HT3s and HTC crossover settings for movies
« on: 27 Mar 2011, 08:04 pm »
What crossover settings are you using for your HT3s and HTC?  My Denon 4306, using the automatic setting function with its microphone, set the HT3s and the HTC as full range.  I currently have one sub set up and will soon have two (and one day, three).  I'm thinking of changing the crossover settings to 80Hz, as I don't see a benefit for movies for having the HT3s and HTC play below 80Hz.

So, what crossover settings are you using for the HT3s and HTC?

I'm using 60 for the 3's and 75 for the HTC.  I have 2 subs.  I think you should set the HT 3's and center as small using the Denon.  I have a Anthem D2v with their Anthem room correction which chooses for me.

If the electronic filter is high order wouldn't it make sense to crossover to the sub ~60Hz for true non-localized bass?

Personally, I've never been a believer in non-localized bass, until I read the theory that you place multiple subs around the room for the best bass response.  Now, that seems reasonable to me.  For music, I'd still run the HT3s full range for a more even distribution of bass.  Currently, I have two subs, one spaced within a few feet of a corner on one wall and one spaced about midway on the other wall.  I only have one working right now (5 month old + 3 YO = not much time), but I hope to have two working in a few weeks.

My main concern is not overdriving the drivers in the HT3s/HTC with low bass material they can't produce anyway.  I'll have to see what the options are for my receiver and see if I can run each set of speakers at a different frequency range.  I know my surrounds cutoff at 120Hz, and 150Hz (according to the auto setup program), but I'm not sure whether the receiver just applied one cutoff to all the speakers that are selected "small" or whether I can select different cutoffs.  If I have to run the HT3s/HTC at 150 HZ, I probably won't do that.

Here are the settings the Anthem Room Correction chose for my speakers and you can't tell where the bass is coming from.
