Light with a nice grapefruit like citrus zing. Delicious!

Forgot to say it's about $6.99 at Trader Joes.

Great thread idea!  I'm not real good at waxing poetic with tasting notes, but as an enthusiast / bargain hunter, I'll try and contribute from time to time.

Here's one I tried last night and recommend @ $9 (PA State Store):

Santa Helena Reserva Carmenère 2008.

(note the above pick shows the 2009; otherwise label is identical).

IMHO Carmenère is a nice change-of-pace grape... this one is on the softer side with a medium body and bright dark fruit.

Becker Vineyards Iconoclast Merlot
Probably hard to come by outside of Texas, but they do a very professional job with grapes from 3 or 4 vineyards.  A decade ago, I knew one of their vineyard managers and used to help them harvest. We would start about midnight and finish up just about daybreak.  I'd come back a day or so later and glean the vines, getting 100-300 pound of grapes, to make my own Merlot/Cab blend- very similar but not quite as oaky as the professionally made Becker.  My friend retired and I haven't had a decent crop off of my scraggly vines to make wine since.

Fog Hill
Propietary Red Wine North Coast.

circa?!! this decade I guess (undated)…not for the Oenophile.

" a delightful blend of Cab, Zin, Syrah, Merolt and a splash of Petite Sirah….Napa,CA"

A very nice $10 table wine. zesty, slightly forward, plumish and bit of oak. but very balanced. ( this would be my first tasting note ever. )

Waiting for the Chicken Barley Soup to finish
