New iPad owner has a question
« on: 14 Mar 2011, 08:15 pm »
Can I download music or a movie onto an SD card on my laptop and then
use it on my iPad via a card reader?  If now...how can I use external memory sources to bolster the 32gb I have on my iPad.  Just a heads up...I've always been a android/PC guy, so having a tablet that won't let me use external cards presents a learning curve for me.
tnx,
Hibuck....

No. Sorry that's the long and short of it.

you can use air share/homeshare to stream content from any pc or iOS device as long as they are on the same wifi network, but external HDs of any sort is pretty much not going to happen... Not that I'm aware of anyway.

OK...I know you're pretty up to speed on things "Mac".  I just wondered why one can move pictures...etc. onto the iPad, but not other types of files? Like I said, this is a whole new world to me.

I wish I had an answer for that. Having the SD and USB card attachment myself I've often wished that it had more functionality, but alas, Apple has made it photos only for some reason. Hence why I always buy the biggest iOS device available rather than the 16 or 32 gig versions.

I don't recommend it, but another option is jailbreaking so you can make this work. 4.3 has apparently been jailbroken already, but nothing yet is downloadable.

Thanks Pez.  I kind of suspected as much, but am always looking for a simple work around.  I think it will do data...but at the end of the day, I'm not buying a used iPad to be a productivity tool.  It's just lighter and easier to travel with on vacation and take some books and music along all in one easy package.

Try the app PhotoSync, it's a free download on an iMac/Macbook and $2.99 for your iPad.  Not only can you move photos wirelessly but you can also transfer movies wirelessly also.  Only downside is that I've only been able to get movies transferred to the iPad as photos and thus losing out on pause/ff etc ..functionality even though the movie plays fine.  Maybe there's a workaround but I've been too busy?

There needs to be an app designed to do that.  For good or bad, there is no concept of "user controlled" file management on the iPad.    For certain applications you can use the iDisk (mobileme users) and even upload files when you sync with a computer.

No...I've stopped being an early adopter   :D  I've spent a lot of money over the years wanting the latest and best.   I'll just make sure I have at least iOS 4.2 on it so it will do multitasking and I'll be happy.  Someday, I'm gonna find someone to walk me through setting up digital streaming...etc.  Right now, I'm going in the other direction with a TEAC reel to reel archiving my vinyl.

Being a machead I have 2 iphones, an ipad, macbook air and 27" iMac. The single biggest pain in my ass is trying to share media between all of these devices. Some things I have on the iMac, some I have on the iPad and getting video from one device to another has always been a complete pain. Now it's pretty easy with homeshare and airshare.

What you need is Airstash.

A wireless flash drive.
I'm not sure of the battery life but you can add a usb battery pack and charge this and your iPad at the same time if needed.

Thanks for that info!   It's not cheap, but it is a work around.
I'll play for awhile and then probably pick one up.  A self-contained
media streamer.  Cool!

Airstash looks like an incredible item...if I read this right you can take the airstash and you laptop (PC or MAC correct) and wirelessly stream files from the airstash but there MUST be a wifi network present you can access right?

or can you stream files off the airstash directly WITHOUT a wifi network??

kid coleco--thank you..great gadget for sure.

The more research I did I noticed the airstash to be a little slow when streaming videos. An iPad app is in development so it should be worth keeping an eye on. I believe you can plug it directly into any usb port.
