Benchmark Media has been making pro quality stuff for awhile. The best part is that you can get a very good preamp, DAC, headphone amp and even HDR or remote in a very compact unit.

I think the DAC1 USB has been one of my favorite pieces for a few years now. Sound is accurate, clear, quiet. Headphone amp is awesome.

My two cents...

I just picked up a Grant Fidelity DAC 09, and it can act as a preamp, and is smaller than normal.

Has digital (optical, coax), usb, and analog inputs.

No remote though.

Under $250.
