Can those things be spiked?

I seem to remember Brian saying that adjustable spikes might be available (so that you could aim the speaker up/down a bit).

Literally just got home from out of town so haven't looked regarding the spikes.  I'll look closer over the weekend.

You haven't heard of the new high tech yellow fiber drivers?  Real lowww power requirements and a warm soft muffled sound! :jester:

Building kit versions of 626R, LRC, Large Sub, and the RM30s.  Will start RM30s after completing the 626Rs.

Those look very nice.  The new base design looks great!

Congrats on your new speakers, keep us posted on how the kit works out and of course how they sound.

Thought I would post pics of the completed RM30s for those interested.  I also added the 626R and LRC kits I've done as well.

Now, I just need my surround preamp and amps to get here so I can give that rocker some action!

I'm green with envy. You've got the ingredients for a real stunner. I'm sure that with all the breakin, adjustments, more breakin, more adjustments, etc. you've got a long road ahead to get everything right, but what a fun project. Please keep us up to date on this.

Great looking set of speakers.  It sounds like you will have a great opportunity to compare your LRC as a center speaker against one of your RM-30's.  I don't know what your set up will be like, but even if you can't place an RM-30 on top of your TV, perhaps you could try a temporary horizontal position below it.  I am using an RM-30C as a center and think it is clearly better than one or two 626R's.  Your LRC might make a great rear speaker in a 6.1 set up.

Rick,

Are you using a vertical or horizontal Rm-30-c??? What do you notice as better then the 626 or bi-626??

Larry, I'm not Rick, but I did try a single 626R  and I currently use a RM30 C horizontal.

The main difference was that the output of the 626 midrange was not enough to match up with the 40's very well.

The 3 midrange panels of the 30 make it a seemless match to the 40's.

Larry,
I am using a horizontal RM-30C

First, I have to state that I am unable to make a proper comparison between 626R’s and the horizontal RM-30C because my 626R’s are stock, with soundcoat, and my RM-30C has both FST and TRT.

So, I can say something about the added benefits of FST/TRT, which are significant.  These options make noticeable improvements in, clarity, detail and high end extension.  You notice the shimmer of cymbals, the richness of woodwinds and brass instruments, and details that were previously missing.  The increased detail can be heard in individual instruments – hearing the air pass through a flute, or in reflections from the walls of the music venue giving a larger sense of space in a recording.  The nuances of vocals and dialog are also evident.

It is critical, of course, to have the center channel match the timber of the L&R channels, so using a non-FST/TRT center that has less detail, clarity and extension, is disappointing.

In terms of comparing one 626R to two of them, head to head, more is clearly better.  A single sounds a little boxy and you are sometimes noticing the sound coming from the speaker.  By spreading the sound source with two, the illusion of the sound coming from the actor on the screen is much better.  Dialog is enhanced and more intelligible with two midrange ribbon drivers.  Of course you have more bass with two woofers.

I would think that two 626R’s with FST’s and TRT’s used head to head would be very close to a single RM-30C. The RM-30 does have better bass capability, but this will only come into play if you crossover the center at a low enough frequency.  I am currently using a Lexicon MC-1 and crossing over the center at 40Hz.  Two 626R’s without these upgrades are not a good match for RM-30 or RM-40 L&R speakers that have the upgrades.

One issue raised in the past was the fact that the RM-30C used horizontally would not be symmetrical.  In practice, I don’t hear any problems.  The mids seem to be close enough to the center to allow the illusion of speech from actors to work well.  I have not noticed any problems with highs or bass.

Hi Rick,

How did you make the tilted (V-shaped) speaker stand?  What's it made of?  I always wanted to do that.

Thanks,

RickRichardson

I made it from a large sheet of 1/2" grey foam, the kind used to line camera bags, etc.  I cut pieces the width of the speaker(49"), less 1".  I cut one 19" deep for a base, then I cut 3 more 6" deep.  I raised the back of the speaker enough to put the 3 pieces under the back.  That gave me the correct angle for the primary listening position, about 17' from the TV.  Use more pieces in the back for a greater angle.  I then measured and cut triangular pieces to cover the sides.  It gives it the appearance of a big grey foam weg.

It really does look great, and you can't tell that it's not all one piece.  Now, I just ahve to find where I can buy the foam!

I got my 24" x 60" piece of 1/2" thick grey foam at a foam distributor.  Check the yellow pages.  Mine cost about $12.
