Burson HA 160D

Just curious whether anyone has this DAC in their system yet. Love to hear some end user feedback, especially its USB input.

One thing I am puzzled by with this DAC. In the 6Moons review the author quotes the designer as stating that the USB implementation is asynchronous. But no where in any of the online literature for this DAC does it say so. Makes me wonder whether it really is or not.

Love to hear your impressions.

I have heard good things about it (very powerful). Sadly, i haven't ordered mine yet.

Have you contacted guys from Burson? their customer service is pretty good. They always reply emails fast.

I have had mine for about two weeks. This is an amazing DAC IMO. I use the USB input directly from a dedicated music PC and the coax input for my CD player.

Good to hear your enjoying it. Can you compare the USB to the coax at all?

I can't give you a accurate answer since I am using two different sources. Part of the secret is the very quiet multi stage regulated power supplies. The striking thing is the definition and space around individual sound sources. The enclosure is substantial and well built.

Had the chance to give it a listen on my friend house via USB (hooked up to his laptop) and the sound was amazing when playing Flac files or cd's.
I'm sure using the coax will give you good results as well.

It sounds very nice.  Great imaging, soundstage with a neutral presentation and a very tight low end.

I emailed Burson the following question:

Can you tell me about the USB input on your new DAC/PRE/Head -- the 160? I'd like to know the specifics about the implementation of the USB input?

Here is the response I received:

Our USB receiver is in adaptive mode with jitter correction. It works in PC, Mac and Linux environment and accepts audio files with resolution up to 24bit / 96khz.

Best regards,

Alex

If the receiver is in adaptive mode, doesn't that mean it is not an asynchronous implementation?   I have owned wonderful DAC's some of which use asynchronous USB and some which do not. I have no doubt this is a great DAC. But for someone who only uses USB I'd like to know about it, one way or the other.

Not async.  Skill of designer is more important than the methodology used.

Peace,

Agreed. Thank you, Lee.

It does also suggest that what was reported in the 6 Moons review is not quite accurate. Again, it does not mean this is not a wonderful DAC. Just trying to get accurate info.
