Is it normal for Mac Mini...
« on: 20 Feb 2011, 10:12 pm »
vibrate and make noise while importing a CD?  I'm not talking about little whining noise.  Mine vibrates enough to make my rack vibrate in sympathy and enough noise I can hear it clear across the room (22 feet).  A friend of mine said it's not normal.  It seems to work fine though.

Doesn't sound normal to me.  My laptop sounded like that when I got it.  I took it in and they replaced the optical drive for me.

Is this happening with every cd?
My Mac Mini and also my laptop will do this with some cds, maybe one in twenty. I'd love to see someone chime in with a reason. I kinda figured it was an unbalanced disc but not sure.

Mine does it too, periodically.

One in about 20 sounds right.

Mine  is horribly loud while burning a CD. This may be brand dependent- I am not sure as I have only one brand of blanks here. My MacBook is quiet with the same brand.

Mine is fine so far importing CDs or playing DVDs.  In any event, I will be taking mine to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store just to be sure, as it is under warranty.

Let us know the outcome if you don't mind. Mine is still under warranty also.

Yes, do. I brought mine in for a tutorial and to the Genius bar for another problem and when I mentioned this one, I was told that they had no idea what it was. And couldn't do anything unless I left it and the problem occurred while they had it. As I bought the 3 year warranty, I didn't leave it and am not too worried about it now.

Mine does it more than 1 in 20.  More like 1 in 3 or 4.

I have never had this issue with either of Minis, but maybe my drives are in better shape. How much usage on your equipment? I was advised when gearing up to create my Mini music server to buy a low-cost external. I used one to import most of my CDs.

I bought mine back last November but only about a week ago I actually opened it up and set up my server.  The noise was the first thing I noticed when I imported my first CD into the Mini.

The Apple Store deems my drive just fine. I am burning a few CDs now with the Mini. Some are silent, some aren't- I think the noise is disc related.

On the other hand, my MacBook is quiet all the time.

I'm not going to worry about it.

Lots of use in the two months I have had it- both for listening to music and streaming HD video movies. The drive has had very little use (less than 10 CD's burned, 4-5 CDs imported and a few DVDs played.) It only makes noise when burning.
