« on: 10 Apr 2011, 01:15 am »
I would like your opinions on the following scenario:
Assuming that my room is correctly acoustically treated would the 3.7s work well in my room:
7 feet high
12 feet wide
18 feet long

Alsoyou could ask if short wall or long wall might be better. This popped up while thinking about this. Is there such a thing as near field listening with maggies?
Sorry if I hi jacked this for a bit.

Hijack away!!  Good point about long or short wall.
In my case the speakers would need to be along the 12 foot wall.

Having to buy speakers without being able to try them in your listening room is the most maddening part of buying an audio product.  The answer to your question in my mind is, it's a complete crapshoot.  I'll pray for you! :thumb:

The ceiling is kind of low so that might cause some problems.

Yes. But I'd place them along the long wall.

Yes yes and yes. The rectangular room is best for all Maggies. The 7ft clg offers no issues we had our in a room with a 6"-10" clg no problem. actuslly the low clg. enhances the sound.
Start at 5 to 6 ft. apart and one third into the room. try tweeters on inside and outside. With only not much side wall distance the inside position would be better. I see no issues. Buy them.

thanks Charles - but you can see where my dilemna comes in:
You are in the the "no problem - buy 'em" camp.
Steve Ford is in the "could cause some issues" camp.
What is an audio-fella to do (sigh)?
Also, I was planning to situate them along the 12 foot wall - another poster suggested placing them along the long wall.  You see what I mean.
I think the bottom line is this - I am going to need an acoustical expert/engineer to formulate some actual measurements to quench my nervosa.

"quench your Audio Nervosa? HAH. The solution is to stop reading and just DO.
Zen like clarity. who cares if it is technically the best possible of a gazillion possible ways of doing it.
Having it and being satisfied with it. Music!!
I loved my Infinity RSIIa (thirty years ago) in a tiny 10 by 11 ft room. Loved it because it was music.
Yeah you can worry about making it better.. but at least be listening to it while you ponder! Worrying in advance if it will be Ok. DO!! go now!
Thank me later, grasshopper.

You'd better listen to Elizabeth.
Perhaps your local dealer will work with you some - if the 3.7s don't work out to your satisfaction you could go with 1.7s instead?  It never hurts to ask.

Your room is almost the same size as mine. I have 3.6R's. And they sound great.

Happy Listening,

Mark

Just wanted to add as a fellow small room sufferer that Steve's assessment and Elizabeth's aren't necessarily contradictory. Which is to say they'll be at their best in a larger room, but will usually still sound good in a small one. This is particularly true if you can do some acoustic treatment and are willing to EQ down any excess bass. There are actually some acoustic advantages to a small room, such as more bass, that help to offset the disadvantages, such as more irregular bass. The most important requirement I think is that you be able to keep them at least 3' and preferably 5' out from the front wall, they can be used closer but the sound will be significantly impaired.
