Old RM-2 questions
« on: 17 Feb 2011, 09:28 am »
Hi, I recently came across a set of the old RM-2's and one speaker has a 3.3 ohm (DCR) woofer with a smaller magnet and the other is a double stack magnet at 4.1 ohms (DCR). Both are the carbon fiber cones with the wood phase plug. So....anybody have a leftover woofer that might match either of these?  :icon_lol:  Or a pair of matching ones to part with? I slightly prefer the double stack ones sound, but that may be partly the higher crossover point that 4.1 ohms would give vs. the other a 3.3 ohms.
Beyond that, these have an older ribbon mid style than I haven't seen before that is bigger and more heavily framed than the Neo-panels. They also have the dual spiral ribbon tweets. I am having fun massaging the crossover points a bit to see how seamless I can get them. First test is letting the mids run free on top (bypassed the .4mh coil).  That's because I perceived a sight separation between tweets and mids, and the spirals are a bit too crisp to fill in the upper mids for my taste, so I actually moved them up from the stock 3.1uf, to a 2uf but left the .2mh shunt coil as found. So far very nice with seamless blend and those older ribbons are really smooth.  :P

I have some but they look like poly cones. I modified the bass system and don't use stock drivers.

Hi PMAT, if I don't find any matching carbon fiber ones, I may consider yours. Do you know what the DCR (ohms) is on them? Thanks,  JAY

No, but I can measure them if you get to that point. Pretty high distortion though.
