I have settled on buying a pair of ATH M50's which will be used for portable use with a newly acquired Cowon J3.  I have read over at Headfi.org that a good number of people think that a coiled cable is best for portable use.  At the same site, I also read how a good number of people like a straight cable over a coiled one whether it be for portable or home use.  I think I might be more comfortable in getting a straight cable version and just shortening it up and reterminating it with a Nuetrik or a Switchcraft plug.  In addition, no vendor has the coiled M50 in stock, whereas I can pick up the straight cable version immediately.  I would certainly appreciate anyone's thoughts on this subject.

Thanks,

rklein

Yes, people recommend the coiled version for portable use..like walking around, etc.

But personally, i like more using the straight cable for headphones (i find it to be more comfy)...i have shortened them.  :)

It comes to a personal taste IMO.

Personally, I prefer the straight cord over coiled.  Coiled cords seem to weigh more and are more bulky when you are transporting them.  I fly 50,000+ miles a year and a 4' straight cord works best.  I also like to jog and run with a short 3' straight cord.  Anything longer tends to get in the way.
At home I use a 10' coiled cord however.  The coiled cord will give advanced warning if you are straying to far from the amplifier whereas a straight cord may take the amp of the shelf of simply unplug if you are lucky.

I have coiled version - they work fine for me - regardless ... great choice of can for a good price ... well balanced sound - with a nice bass boost ... enjoy

Either version (coiled, straight) are right for me.

Let us know which one you get.

Thanks for your replies.  I will be getting the ATH M50s which is the straight version and then shortening and re-terminating the end.
