Bugle - Power Options???
« on: 3 Feb 2011, 08:47 pm »
I'm about to order the Bugle Half Kit and I have a few questions.

I have read and understand the optional power supply has sonic advantages over the 9v batteries. I am not going to do 9V batteries.

Has anyone gone to the power supply after using 12V SLA batteries and noticed much of a difference?

Should 12V 4ah SLA's sound better than 12V 1.3 SLA's (I know they should last +/- 3 times longer)?

I've read that with battery power it's still beneficial to use caps in the power supply. If so, please respond with specific type, value and how to use them in the circuit?

It is mainly unrelated to capacity of a battery. The internal resistance and noise level is much important players contributing to sound.

Am I wrong? The Bugle has already had caps shunting the batteries.

Poty, You're right on the caps. I remember reading that you remove those caps when using the power supply.

Has anyone switched from SLA's to the power supply and noticed improvements?

Is the Bugle silent when using the power supply?

Be sure to check the voltage of the caps you got for the "power supply" as mine are 16v (built mine mostly from scratch parts bin).  While 16v is great for 9v batteries, there's not much of a buffer when using 12v (fully charged could be over 14v).  I'm used to just about doubling the voltage of caps over the operating voltage (thus 9v batteries should have +/- 18v cap - 16v in my case.  I'd suggest 25v caps if you go the 12v SLA route.
