Just getting started...
« on: 6 Feb 2011, 07:37 pm »
i just installed my squeezebox touch and am making the transition from playing CDs to streaming wirelessly.  My music collection sits in Itunes on my imac and the plan is to stream the music to the Touch and then from the touch to a Bryston DAC.  I also have some hi rez downloads that i will be streaming.  so far so good. everything seems to work well out of the box. I have read some of the posts on hi rez and pure music and have a questions

1.  in my current setup, will the hi rez files in itunes stream to the squeezebox touch at 24/96 resolution without being modified by itunes.  i.e. can itunes handle 24/96 files properly.

2.  since i am streaming to squeezebox touch, does itunes play much of a role as the player?  in terms of pure music, is there any advantage to using it with itunes in my configuration or does the touch handle all of the playing duties.

Thanks

Crimson

Howdy.

1. iTunes has no problem handling 24/96 material. However, it does not automatically switch sample rates to match that of the source file. This needs to be done manually when switching sample rates in the AudioMidi utility. Other audio apps (PM/PV, Amarra, etc.), working in tandem with iTunes, enable automatic sample rate switching as required. I cant say if the SB Touch does this as I'm not familiar with it.

2. Again, not being familiar with the SB Touch, I can't say if it works similar to the other playback apps I've mentioned above which only use iTunes as a file management front end. Not sure if PM would be of any benefit in your scenario, or if it's even possible.

To use the Logitech Touch, you must use SqueezeBox Server. That is your music control program. iTunes has absolutely nothing to do with the Touch. Exit the program. There is no need for it. Pure Music will not do anything with the Touch.

The Touch, along with SqueezeBox Server, will stream native 24/96 without you having to do anything.

You might might to consider using a different ripping program other than iTunes. If you want to use iTunes so you can use other devices, fine. But there are other ways to get down the path that may give better performance. Particularly if you are using a Touch as an interface device.
