bass frequency response if N3 TL rear port plugged?

I'm looking at a pair of N3 TL rear port speakers from a fellow AC member this weekend.  I have a Danny/ Rythmik 12" servo sub that will serve lowest end duty.

Currently the back of my sealed N2x's are 6" from 2" thk. acoustical panels that are 2" from wall. So I assume 10" overall from back wall applies since sound waves pass thru panels & bounce off wall.  I currently measure 55 Hz - 3 dB in my room w/o sub.  I know imaging suffers, but I am bound by this tragedy of a room layout for now.

Anyways, short term the N3 would need to be in same position as N2x's (next year my plans are for back of N3 TL's to be 2' away from wall).  So with that in mind ...

What foam is best to plug N3 rectangular rear ports & will frequency response drop to mid 70 Hz in room like N3S sealed versions?  Does speaker efficiency remain the same w/ plugged ports?

Plugging the opening of the TL will bring the -3db up to just a little less than the sealed version. Power handling in the lower ranges will also be less as the drivers will no longer be loaded by the TL.

It will not change the overall sensitivity of the speaker. Only the bottom end is effected.

Robert,

When you're auditioning the N3's try distancing them 6" - 10" from the wall and see what you think. I typically leave mine out about 12" - 15", but will occasionally push them closer to the wall when listening to certain kinds of music, or when watching movies.

You may find that you're able to dial them in nicely @ 6" - 10" out with just lightly to moderately stuffing the TL as opposed to "plugging" it. Cool thing about the N3TL is that it offers you this kind of flexibility.

Best of luck with the audition!

I predict it'll be love at first sound. :thumb:

Thanks Ruben, very good to know (esp. moderately stuffing the port... didn't think of that).  If I get them, I will definitely take measurements & play around w/ placement as much as possible.

Hi Danny and all Audio Circle members.
If you change from rear to front the vent port, what would that do,
other than being able to put the N3 closer to the back wall?
What if you can't put the N3 with back port in a corner wall?
If you don't use the fiberglass stuffing, but still use the NoRez what would that do on the overall sound of the N3 TL.

With the TL exit out the front then you get what you get. Moving it in and out from the back wall does not change the output, but it does allow for closer placement to the rear wall without the coupling effect.

With it in the rear then you have some flexibility. Moving it in and out from the wall changes the way it couples with the wall and changes the output levels.

Ideally you don't want them with the TL termination right up against a wall. You will want them well out into the room.

Then you might have an internal cavity resonance. I'd follow the plans regarding damping material and stuffing to avoid problems.
