We should make a list for folks that are new and need some direction, maybe a place to start, I'll keep it...will go back through the thread and make a list. Its probably been done already, maybe by me and I forgot, but heck I'll do it again then!! Thanks tomwhite!

Definitely a killer idea Eclein, most of us when we are seeking for guidance we usually start a new thread.
An advice thread would be nice.  :thumb:

I recommend looking through head-fi.org before spending a lot of time making lists and tutorials.  Your call though.

I have a number of sets of cans, none very pricey.  Earlier someone suggested the AKG ATH M50 and they were recommended by someone on this board who is a recording engineer.  They have become my favorites when I need isolation (still prfer speakers.)
BTW, I found them online for less than $100, much less.

edit:these are by Audio Technica not AKG (my bad)

Another vote for AT-M50 - though they have a little boost in the bass region which is a welcome thing (in my opinion) - especially if you are listening at low to medium levels.

I was wondering if we could start a thread for exchanging / trying out headphones - where the person loaing would be responsible for shipping both ways ...

I know I have spent a lot in trying different phones only to find that they were not for me - or they did not meet my expectation based on the reviews etc ...

Cheers

OK, I have a list maybe it merits being a sticky but thats up to whomever. I just made the list based on this thread and didn't research each one to make sure the price was under $150 so if you see one listed thats out of bounds tell me and I'll delete. These are in no particular order and just based on folks here who took the time to contribute positive opinions on these cans, man!!!

AKG 701
AKG K430
Audio Technica ATH-M50
Audio Technica ATH-A700
Beyer DT880
Beyer DT250
Grado SR60
Grado SR80i
Sennheiser HD580
Sennheiser HD600
Sennheiser HD555
Shure SRH840
Sony MDR-XD200

If anyone has another pair they like under $150 tell me and I'll add it....this is a work in progress

You can also add the SRH 750dj, similar sound signature to the M50's.

I am going to pick up the ATH M50.  They come in two versions the coiled and straight cable(ATH M50s).  Just wondering people's preference regarding these two versions.

Thanks,

Randy

Well, I went to Headfi.org and typed in Coiled vs Straight in the search box.  It seems coiled is the way to go if you are going to be using the cans on the go.  While the ATH A700 seems to get the nod for a wider soundstage over the ATH M50, the M50 is much more durable.  I can pick up the M50's for $100 with free shipping and will probably go this route.

BTW, I have a pair of STAX cans that I bought back in 1977 which are still going strong. :thumb:

I've listened to almost everything out there, and for closed headphones I think the Beyerdynamic DT250-250(ohm) headphones are the best in the price range.

If we are talking open headphones, then that requires a quiet listening area.  I would not go below the level of a Sennheiser HD580 or HD600.  If you look around in the used market, you can find them close to the $150 price.

For in ear monitors, the Etymotics are the only thing under $150 that are worthwhile, at least that I've heard.  Of course, you really haven't lived until you've tried out some high end IEM's, they are like a mainline injection of the recording, direct to your brain.  JH Audio makes the best IEM's in the world, and I've heard all of them.

Tyson:

Are the Beyerdynamic DT250-250ohm a good portable headphone?

Thanks,

Randy

Yes, they are very good portable, since they isolate pretty well and are easy to drive.  If you're interested, I'm letting my pair go for a steal, because I need to finance the BeyerDynamic T1 headphones I just bought.

I listen to a wide variety of music genres, but if you're a basshead. I recommend the Sony XB500/700's.
They have boomy bass. Both can be found under $150
