Avastar Preamp
« on: 21 Jan 2011, 02:38 pm »
My new preamp arrived yesterday, it replaced the Ultra (small chassis), the sound is terrific, it was pretty incredible before as well.
The improvement? I can't be sure, yet. I will be doing a lot more listening in the coming days, it seems to snow here in NY everyday!
The best way to pass the time......music :D
Anyone interested in a well cared for Ultra??

Well I have listened a bit and here are some early thoughts;
The bass, seems unchanged  :o, the upper end, about the same minimal difference. :?
The mids, aha, there is the difference. After listening to some tracks that I am very familiar with, it became apparent that at least to my ears that there is more, whats the word?? Revealing or clarity better defined perhaps, maybe just sounds better is the most accurate way to describe  :duh:
Overall: I give it a  :thumb: :thumb:
Very happy with this unit, and the build quality is as usual outstanding.
Happy listening to all who make the plunge for this unit.
Next up; maybe the newest DAC, 8)

Thanks clipped. Care to share the other gear in your set?

Your small chassis Ultra runs the 12AT7's? Thanks

I don't know what tubes are in the Ultra, never opened it up. Like Clint Eastwood said " A mans got to know his limitations" LOL
I am strictly a listener
My system: Ht3's driven by the Ultra 550 double, Avastar pre, and the Ultra DAC also small chassis. Oppo player.
The room is 17x14.
Bottom line way to much power with way to much speaker, perfect!! :thumb:

Aww come on now, you can never have too much power !  :D  It just means you running things within the idling/power curve limits rather than bouncing the valves off the pistons, it avoids that ringing sound.

Okay, thanks, I remember you now. Nice set. :thumb: I don't think that's too much power for the HT3's. Really, I don't know what would be.
