Torus vs plitron
« on: 20 Jan 2011, 06:24 am »
what's the difference between torus BX and plitron isolation units? (other than the obvious # of outlets).

The piltron is priced quite a bit lower. Are there any other differences or is one just better looking for audio purposes?

I think they are very similar but email Matt at Plitron and he should be able to answer this.

They do look very simular.I have a 10a Torus and she looks exactly the same except the face plate
and I see on the back the switch is the same BUT the cord  on the Plitron is fixed.
The Torus you can change it out if that makes a difference to you.
As for the insides I don't know,I'd like to know what you find out.

thanks for the email.

I will let you guys know the response.

I was going to purchase a BX unit in the states (since they appear to be quite a bit cheaper than my local cdn dealer) but if Plitron medical ones are the same, I'll save the hassle and order directly since they're priced at slightly lower than the BX USA pricing.

Too bad the pricing isnt the same in Canada when our dollar is at par and that Plitron is a Canadian company (or maybe the american dealers just like to give discounts right away).

There is a BX-5 on Audiogon for around 900 I believe.
Depends on the amperage you need.
Also there is a Torus 15a 120v on Canuck Audio Mart for 1500

yeah, i had my eye on the BX5 on agon but for less $, I could get a 10A medical one though 5A is sufficient for my needs.

Spoke to Matt at Torus.
The 2 units are geared towards different markets. The Torus filtration unit is geared towards audio and that filtration doesn't need to be tuned in the same way for a medical unit.

He doesn't believe that anyone's tested them side by side to hear if there were any differences

In the end it's a judgment call. My budget was 1k at most so it's something that I'll have to think about.

I haven't,I use to use Shunyatas before the Torus stomped all over them even with dedicated lines.
I actually have 3XTorus(s)60a,20a and the 10a(I use for one sub)I wouldn't mind one more 10a for another sub just cuz.
My electrician said I have enough power for my audio to run eight commercial dryers :green:..

When I heard the Torus transformation to my music,I was totally blown away.
It only happened when I had enough Torus power to run my amps, then it was showtime.
Somebody said once:you have discovered as I have that having gobs of reserve power:
, MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE ON THE AMPS .

This is an interesting question, and one which I've seen pop up in another forum. I myself considered the Plitron medical-grade units until I got my feet wet and did a little more digging.

One thing which I feel must set Torus apart from most other options is mechanical noise. I'm not aware of anything out there in the world of iso-transformers that can match the DEAD SILENCE of the Torus units under ANY line conditions. I've had first hand experience with transformers designed for computers (OneAC, Powervar) and have read many comments about various other units (like Topaz and even some Equitech). Seems that some people luck out and either get a "quieter than normal" transformer, or their power just doesn't insult the transformer so much with DC offset or whatever else causes mechanical hum/buzz. My last OneAC isolation transformer (a 12amp unit, CB1115) was suprisingly loud. I was using it in a smallish bedroom and there was a constant hum audible throughout the room. Not so bad when music was playing, but for quiet passages or movies I found it very irritating. Yes, I could have modded it to be quieter, but I suspect it never could be completely silent.

One other thought - Torus also oversizes their transformers for current delivery, so it's possible that you would need a larger medical PIU to get the same/similar performance.
