Does anyone have a recommendation for a good recording of this type of music?

"Deep in the Heart of Tuva"

It turns out they used to sing some of their songs on horseback on long trips and so the rhythms, like some older C&W music, reflect the horse's gait. Extraordinary.

I don't think I had heard Mongolian, or Tuvan, or whatever the fellow is speaking until I listened to the first link posted by coke. It doesn't sound much like any other language I have heard.

What a great story that is - a blind guy who lives for the radio hears Tuvan throat singing on Radio Moscow shortwave and through dogged determination learns how to do it, eventually travels to Tuva and enters a throat singing competition and does really well.

For some very cool related music, do a search for Yat Kha. Amazon carries several of their titles. Another good thing about Yat Kha is that their sound quality is outstanding and I would regard it as audiophile quality. Their Re-Cover is a particularly interesting album with some of the most fun covers I've ever heard.
