To all X-Omni owners.

I have been checking all of the X-Series speakers before they go out with an impedance sweep. This makes sure all the drivers are connected and all looks (electrically) as designed.

So far so good, but then I noticed when I shot a curve on the X-Omni that there was a slight cavity resonance that was indicative of insufficient damping material.

So I popped a woofer out and noticed a very thin layer of felt all around the inside of the box and nothing in the very bottom. This was not how I specified these to be made.

So I added a layer of fiberglass insolation all the way down the back side of the box from the port to the woofer. I stayed back about an inch off of the woofer.

I then shot another impedance curve and it looked fine.

So anyone that has or ever bought some X-Omni's from AV123 might want to take a look inside.

I went ahead and modified the pair that I tested for this customer, but I am not going to make these mods on all of them that I have. I simply can not afford to spend a lot of time working on these or making mods as I just don't make enough on them to cover my time spent doing that. These things are selling for only $325 a pair.

My best recommendation is to line them with No Rez then add some additional insolation or poly fill as per these pics. Then you'll have no cavity resonance and tighter and cleaner bass response to boot.

It also wouldn't hurt to check you X-Voce or X-Statiks and add a little poly fill or fiberglass insolation behind the drivers.

These are such great speakers! We gave them a thorough test at the Oregon GTG a couple years ago. Mesmerizing as rears and equally adept as mains. Two pairs of these and an X-Voce and you have a seriously killer HT!

Just grab ahold of it with your fingernails and left it off. It will come off.

Oops! Sorry Danny I didn't mean to make it look like you were talking to yourself. I deleted my post above yours because I got the woofer out like 30 seconds after I posted that. I placed the speaker on the bed and tipped it downward and it came loose.

Yep, I'm going crazy. I opened one of the X-Omni's up today and it had no grills. Then the Styrofoam bock that goes over the end was just pressed down on top of the woofers. So now I have to replace two woofers. Anyone want a pair without grills then I have the perfect pair for you.

Ok so now after I've peeked inside, I see that my speaker looks similar to yours. There is felt like material covering all sides of the cabinet except at the bottom section, where the port hole is. That area is void of anything. There is nothing on the sides, just bare mdf.

I'm don't think I'm going to put in no-rez  at this time, so should I cover the bottom section with more felt material before I put fiberglass in or will your fiberglass trick be sufficient?

If you can reach to the bottom and poke some material all around and up under the port then I would. But as per my pic posted above will be fine.

Ok thanks. My speaker has no loose material to wrap around the port and sides. It is completely bare in that section. So I'll just throw some fiberglass in there from top to bottom like your picture shows.  :thumb:

what no Owens Corning PINK insulation??

I recently picked up a pair of these locally used for a song (well $140 in Moho Satin) ... have not purchased my amp for them yet (still looking for the three R's - reliable, reasonable, and recommended)  thinking of a Parasound Zamp but I digress.

any other tips for getting the most out of these speakers???

Slight aside, but Danny, did you ever design a Neo tweeter version of this speaker?  I saw the one with two of the smaller woofers and ribbon tweeter, but I'm not sure I saw a single-woofer version like the x-omni.

Cheers!

Yep, upgrade the caps and resistors.

If you're only looking for 2-channel then I would highly recommend the Outlaw RR2150!  I have their old discontinued AV receiver and it sounds fantastic!

I found a 20oz bag of poly fill in the closet, can I use this or do I need fiberglass?

The O-3 is the closest.

Yeah, that will be fine.
